Impressively filthy, studded with convincing violence, the picture is very much in an established sub-genre. Go to Full Review

Dark onscreen and pitch-black at its soul, Kavanagh's long-gestating Irish-Luxembourg co-production is a stripped-down story of the eternal battle between good and evil set within the confines of a classic oater. Go to Full Review

It's too monstrous and mean-spirited to please everyone unconditionally, but I found it challenging and honest-and hair-raising enough to work as a modern morality tale in cowboy boots. Go to Full Review

Never Grow Old is a handsome, well-mounted Western in the old-tradition; it’s the kind of film that might have genre fans wondering if this is any good; it is good, the kind of tough, thoughtful film that’s increasingly hard to find but easy to recommend. Go to Full Review

Cusack is convincing as the bad guy, only ever shot in deep shadow, but all the other one-note characters lack the depth to truly bring the story to life. Go to Full Review

George S Apr 21, 2019 Grim, slow, depressing and predictable western is just that.
Poe S Mar 31, 2019 4/1/2019 I had a Chinese martial arts movie in mind while watching, though this one was set during the time of the Western frontier. John Cusack was quite effective as the ruthless antagonist who preyed on the town's fear, which eventually lead to a dramatic loss of life either by his hands or through the consequence of his actions. Harry R Mar 28, 2019 Never Grow Old is a simple, visceral, straightforward western about morality and greed. It wont be remembered for its innovative story for sure, and who knows if I will remember it for anything at all, but the film was definitely a good ride especially thanks to the direction, Hirsch and Cusack. Poe R Mar 24, 2019 When you think of western movies, one tends to fall towards guns, spitting and stand-offs. Well Never Grow Old (directed by Ivan Kavanagh) is that and even more. In the 1870s, a small-town undertaker/ carpenter (Emile Hirsch) and his family face contradictory dilemmas and obstacles when a gang leader (John Cusack) pays a visit. Looking for justice with an ex- member, Cusack disrupts the small Christian town and wreaks havoc on anyone that disagrees or in any way tries to undermine him. Within this, Hirsch gains business, but at what cost? This film brilliantly highlights a sense of ignorance that society subconsciously enforces until itâ(TM)s too late. The two hours of this film are filled with an edge-of-your-seat experience. Besides the plot, this films cinematography was intriguing mainly for the sense of gruesome darkness all throughout. I feel that the director (Ivan Kavanagh) purposely made it so dark, that it was almost difficult to actually make out what happened in some scenes due to the time period its based on. The setting is awfully beautiful but extremely muddy and the props are simple, giving the image of what living in that time period would be like. I also noticed the heavy constant internal and external conflicts between religion and morality/justice. It makes the viewers think and have their own opinion on what should happen. This film kept me on edge the whole time, intrigued with what would happen next. As for the actors, the accents stuck with the setting and with each other. Mainly films with diverse characters tend to have too many different accents or dialect but this one stuck to its agenda and made it easy to follow. In another level it gave the message of how back then, people were replaceable. Iâ(TM)d definitely watch this film again. The two hours are definitely worth it and it just leaves you with suspense but also a feeling of knowing in the end. The action scenes arenâ(TM)t too gruesome either, for a western film, it highlighted its points without getting to obnoxious. It had a great balance between gore and actual fighting. Going in, I didnâ(TM)t think Iâ(TM)d enjoy it, only because the western films Iâ(TM)ve seen tend to linger too long or donâ(TM)t have a plot that sticks. But I definitely enjoyed and would sit through it all again. See more
Abraham G Mar 19, 2019 Sir Clint did this too death in the seventies for goodness sake. If the director wants a new generation buy in , use a current actor for the bad guy ? Cusack looks terrible and it is not the make up ? Dreary would be doing it a favour. Hirches highlights so far , in a relatively short career ? Losing digits in Lone Survivor ! That is it. See more
Theodore G Mar 18, 2019 Riveting performance by John Cusack. Definitely satisfied my western movie addiction.
