Research scientist Tyler (Charles Martin Smith) is sent to the desolate Canadian tundra to find out whether the local wolf population is responsible for decimating Canada's caribou herds. Helped by Ootek (Zachary Ittimangnaq), a local Inuit native, Farley manages to establish an observation post and, while braving the harsh climate, begins to study a family of wolves, as well as the caribou. He eventually determines that the greatest danger to the caribou doesn't move on four legs.

Perhaps the best thing about the film is that the wolves are never made to seem like strange but cuddly dogs. They look like wolves, not especially threatening but still remote and complete unto themselves. Go to Full Review

Feb 5, 2019 my father too me too see this in the theatre when I was 9 years old. I loved the movie even though at that time I didn't understand the context. The scientist was sent to study the wolves because it was claimed that the wolves were depleting the herds. The government also didn't take the project seriously, and sent the scientist with all sorts of unnecessary supplies. during his observations, the scientist realized that the wolves were only occasionally hunting the weak & sick animals, but their primary diet was rodents, and the study changed the world view of the predators place in the food chain. Finn W Nov 12, 2018 Unusual and good. Nice too, say Blobbo.
George W Nov 12, 2018 I'm with Blobbo. This was pretty good.
Anakin S Mar 1, 2017 Biologist is transported to Arctic isolation, largely to fend for himself, to research the wolf and the cause of the disappearing caribou numbers. At times strikingly filmed and engrossing as well, from Farley Mowat's autobiographical book. See more
