Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is a pleasing return to the kind of storytelling captured in those books, in which a mystery is tidily solved through logic and cleverness. Go to Full Review

Lillis shines as the brainy detective, but the movie itself is none too bright. Go to Full Review

Ineffectual, irrelevant and amateurishly conceived from start to finish, this movie is so bad it could kill off Nancy Drew forever. Go to Full Review

Draco W Apr 13, 2019 The movie itself was entertaining and I imagine non-Nancy Drew fans really enjoying it. However, as a hardcore Nancy Drew fan, it was painful to watch them completely change Nancy's character, almost every other character in the story, and the key qualities that make up the fictitious River Heights setting. The only two characters they got right were Bess and Carson Drew. Allow me to briefly list some of major changes that brazenly made. First off, Nancy has lived in River Heights her whole life and sincerely loves the town and the people who live there. This detail is specifically intricate to Nancy's character because her mother actually died when she was very little. In almost every book Nancy participates in community events, constantly volunteering, and always helping anyone who asks for her help, because aside from Hannah, the Drew's housekeeper and mother figure in Nancy's life (NOT her aunt) she considers her friends and neighbors her family. While Nancy is bold and often breaks a few rules, she's close allies with the River Heights police and stays within the law; a model citizen. See more
Apr 8, 2019 Its a kids movie and its cute but thats about it. The main actess knows what she is doing but the rest of the performances seem forced and a bit cheesy. Okay family movie but certainly not something you would want to watch twice. See more
Apr 5, 2019 I found the film to be entertaining and engaging. I feel like they found the perfect cast for each role. As a fan of all things Nancy Drew I was happy when I heard that the film was being made and happy when I saw the trailer. I have to say that it did not let me down. I would recommend this to any Nancy Drew fan. See more
Ron S Apr 2, 2019 A cute mystery for teenagers. Katt Shea's Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019) is a delightful mystery drama with bright lighting, fun tone, and great actresses. I rather enjoyed this version of Nancy Drew re-imagined as a wise cracking sleuth delinquent. Sophia Lillis is adorable and charming as the new Nancy Drew. She is smart and clever with a love for comebacks, friendship, and skateboarding. Lillis is very cool and feels natural as Nancy Drew. The many shots of her brilliant blue eyes let you see how hurt Lillis plays the character in regards to her dead mother and disengaged father. Lillis understands how to portray sadness while still having fun with the character. You are totally with her all the way through and it's just fun hanging out with Sophia Lillis solving a mystery. Katt Shea's direction is solid with some surprisingly neat shots. The cinematography of Lillis skateboarding around are all fun and unique as the perspective constantly shifts. Shots will go from close up shots of Lillis' face to wider profile shots outdoors. The use of hand cam and steady camera work makes Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase look better than I thought it would. I must mention Laura Wiggins as Helen Corning is really fun as the mean girl. She plays the dumb jerk and the sympathetic friend quite well. I think she had great chemistry on screen with Sophia Lillis. They make a fun pair of sarcastic and endearing teenage girls. The film is short and sweet with a run time of only 89 minutes. You get an engaging adventure with some nice drama attached. The positive messages and relatable themes were a nice touch. I do feel like certain side characters were underwritten, but it says something that I wanted more. For instance, Sam Trammell is great as Nancy Drew's father Carson Drew. I wanted to see more of his character before he slowly disappears from the movie. On the other hand, I could have used less of the villain as he is very one note. In all, Sophia Lillis is perfectly cast as Nancy Drew as she makes for an intriguing detective and a nice protagonist. The film has it's flaws with a predictable and simplistic story that might disinterest adults, but kids and teens will surely love this movie. See more

Albus G Mar 31, 2019 I wasn't sure what to expect of this movie as I'm probably about 35 years older than the demographic for this adventure. What I ended up seeing was a great fun movie with the old fashioned elements of the Nancy Drew books brought into the modern age. Sophia Lilis brings great energy and fun to the role and Linda Lavin is perfect as the older lady in town who needs a mystery investigated. Highly recommended if you're looking for a fun movie with some old school mystery elements. See more
