Craving connection with others, Nancy creates elaborate identities and hoaxes under pseudonyms on the internet. When she meets a couple whose daughter went missing 30 years ago, fact and fiction begin to blur in Nancy's mind, and she becomes increasingly convinced these strangers are her real parents. As their bond deepens, reasonable doubts give way to willful belief - and the power of emotion threatens to overcome all rationality.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nancy is an uncomfortable watch, but worth the effort thanks to Andrea Riseborough's central performance -- and writer-director Christina Choe's powerful empathy for her character's dangerously misguided choices.

The overwhelming screen charisma of Andrea Riseborough is just about strong enough to prevent this identity drama from derailing into art house obscurity. Go to Full Review

Good performances and interesting, though undeveloped narrative ideas in this debut feature from writer-director Christina Choe. Go to Full Review

Smith-Cameron and Buscemi are both terrific, Buscemi for the fullness of his subtlety (so much going on in the looks and silences) and Smith-Cameron, for the depths of pain she can suggest, even when she plays a surface happiness. Go to Full Review

The dueling tensions of the film are quite fascinating. Go to Full Review

In Nancy, director Christina Choe spins out her intriguing yarn with careful precision, keeping us guessing about Nancy and about whether she is the long-lost daughter. Go to Full Review

There's tension in Nancy, but it's not really a thriller or a mystery; it's a detailed, deliberate character study of a woman who seems to wish that she could be anyone other than who she is. Go to Full Review

Harry G Mar 11, 2019 Nancy fabricates personas in order to relate with life. And when one of them is a long lost daughter - things get tricky. And sad. See more
Hagrid S Jan 26, 2019 Movie night with Iris. Interesting debut with strong performances and a compelling tale. This could have gone down a darker, criminal route but wisely doesn't. It stays downbeat, and oddly touching. See more
Han R Dec 5, 2018 Cold and disturbing, yet deep down it is quite heartfelt. The success of the film lies in the moving performances by Andrea Riseborough and J. Smith-Cameron. While the film can be a struggle at times, they always keep it grounded in their award worthy acting. See more
Finn M Nov 24, 2018 A horrible movie litterally nothing happens to make this a thriller You can sleep through the whole thing and see a total of 5 min of the movie and get the jist of it Dont waste your time like i did See more
Harry S Sep 13, 2018 Andrea Riseborough is the one to watch in this harrowing yet empty story of a damaged woman trying to make her life have any meaning by hurting does of other people. It raises difficult questions about someones mental state, but never gets close to give them a proper answer. See more
Luke M Sep 11, 2018 Riseborough is a dream. I see myself in her.
