A second-generation Mexican immigrant narrates his family history, beginning with the journey of his father, Jose (Jacob Vargas), across Mexico to Los Angeles where he meets Maria (Jennifer Lopez) and starts a family. Each subsequent generation contends with political and social hardships, ranging from illegal deportations in the 1940s to racial tensions and gang fights in the '60s and '70s. Yet through it all, or perhaps because of it, the family remains strong.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

My Family's emotional impact is dulled by sentiment, but this well-acted drama strikes a universal chord with its multi-generational look at Mexican-American life.

The film is sweet but never cloying. The continuity doesn't break because the actors - all excellent - convincingly resemble the others who played the same characters in the past. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Feb 2, 2019 The best inspiring movie ever made!
Han W Mar 6, 2018 best movie of all times!!!
Abraham G Jun 11, 2017 I don't know why, but Hispanic families on the lower end of the economic scale seem more prone to social dysfunction, at least in the movies -- and especially in this one. Nevertheless, it is a well done story, and at the end of it, I buried my face in hands and cried. It touched me that much. See more
Theodore L Apr 4, 2017 My Family, Great Movies This movie is by far one of the best Latino stories I have ever seen. True, the movie does use stereotypes (such as Jimmy and his prison life) Chuco and his gang life which eventually leads to his death, and of course who can forget the backyard wedding and the large family living in a small home. However, this movie is not meant to be a representation of ALL Latino's everywhere, rather its meant to merely tell one families story and struggles in the United States. The comments stating "This movie does not represent Latinos everywhere!!" are absolutely correct. And it does not represent Latinos, but it does help you learn about one family you learn to almost care about by the end of the film. Going back to the story itself, I can honestly say that the movie itself was very well made. Jimmy Smits performance was superb and the movie was very focused on all the family members. The film provides a sense of hope at the end, basically trying to get across that while life is full of problems they are manageable. Also, the fact that the movie also involved a different Latino culture, such as the Central American Isabel helped viewers understand that even among Latino's there are differences in cultures. I would definitely recommend this movie to someone willing to learn about one Mexican American families struggle. See more
