Old friends Wallace (Wallace Shawn) and Andre (Andre Gregory) haven't seen each another in five years and agree to meet for dinner. Andre, a once well-known theater director, dropped out of the New York scene to travel the world, while Wallace stuck around, finding only mixed success as a playwright. As they sit down to eat, Andre launches into a series of fantastic stories from his time away, and Wallace can't help but notice how different their worldviews have become.

I think these guys are laughing at us. It's the most obtuse bit of filmmaking I've ever seen. I don't know what point it's supposed to make. I guess I'm just not erudite enough to understand (but I'm erudite enough to use erudite three times in one sentence).

what's the firm ground for a specific relationship? would having a cup coffee with your loved be counted?

110 minute runtime felt like three hours. You could literally film any other people at any other restaurant and it would be more interesting. The conversation was forced and subjects forced. both actors have done other, better work.

Two guys sit and talk over dinner after a long absence. Interesting observations some of which remain relevant decades later. The comments about NYC might get a big laugh even today. Not as insightful or entertaining as The Breakfast Club. Boomers, however, might be fascinated by it.
