With enormous enthusiasm and unsinkable optimism, daredevil Gonzo steps into his first starring role in "Muppets From Space," a hilarious extraterrestrial adventure about the search for Gonzo's past. On a quest with buddy Rizzo to find his real family, Gonzo discovers that his long-lost relatives are actually aliens from a distant planet.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

If Muppets from Space lacks the magic and wit of its cinematic predecessors, this pleasingly silly space romp is funny and clever enough to make for better-than-average family entertainment.

The Muppets were once devilish and sly, but this ploddingly whimsical musical caper, which uses too many '70s soul songs to signify its rainbow-demographic cred, is enough to make you want to see them get slapped around by the Teletubbies! Go to Full Review

In terms of Jim Henson-style wonderment and overall cleverness, "Muppets from Space" comes up short. It's entertaining enough, but lacks the magic the Muppets are so skilled at summoning. Go to Full Review

Han S Nov 16, 2018 A modern return to form for the Muppet franchise. Muppets from Space (1999) takes all the sarcastic silly humor of the old Muppet movies and brings these beloved creatures into a contemporary space. The heartfelt story centered around Gonzo's origins is endearing. The parables about family and uniqueness is sweet. Finally, the humor is so quick paced and funny that Muppets from Space is an easy watch. Tim Hill's direction is simplistic and straight to the point. His shots build up a believable setting of the Muppets living in a home together. We are taken for a ride into the absurd all set to the excellent funk soundtrack, perfectly appropriate for Gonzo's weird and lovable attitude. It's great to hear Dave Goelz as The Great Gonzo, Steve Whitmire as Kermit the Frog, Frank Oz as Miss Piggy and all the other wonderful Muppets like Fozzie Bear! The celebrity cameos are pretty neat with a surprising variety. From F. Murray Abraham's Noah to Katie Holmes as a UFO enthusiast, Muppets from Space keeps you on your toes. I like the performances from Andie MacDowell, Ray Liotta, Katie Holmes, and especially Jeffrey Tambor's role. Tambor back and forth with the Muppet characters is so realistic like he's really interacting with them. He's quite hilarious in Muppets from Space. Unfortunately, alongside some dated CGI and special effects, there are a few characters that ruin a few moments in Muppets from Space. Rob Schneider is as dull and unfunny as ever. Kathy Griffin is so awkward and cringe inducing as a security guard. Lastly, Josh Charles is so strange and campy as a secret agent. At the very least, Muppets from Space is a cute send up of alien contact films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and prison break movies such as The Shawshank Redemption or Escape from Alcatraz. It is a joyous adventure that I hope more families find out about now. See more
Theodore G Jul 26, 2018 Retooled for a slightly different audience and set free with it, this half-imagined '90s Muppets adventure is full of fun special effects and continuous Muppet-brand humor. See more
Ron M Apr 28, 2018 Although it falls short on the magic and charm of other Muppet movies, it's still a really good movie. It has so much unrecognized potential. People are just too busy disliking the bad parts of this movie rather than acknowledging the best parts of the movie and being happy about them. Yes, some parts are weird and don't help the plot, yes there isn't much of a great story, but it's still extremely enjoyable. The jokes are great, in fact, I laugh every time I watch it. Not to mention, it included Muppets from The Muppet Show that didn't get to be in any other movies, which has to count for something. Finally, there's Gonzo, my personal favorite Muppet. Viewers get to see a completely different side to Gonzo in this movie. Compared to The Muppets Wizard Of Oz, it's no where close to a flop. See more
Draco R Apr 22, 2018 A nice Muppet film with an in-depth story of Gonzo's origins. The ending may have been a bit overdone, but I found myself smiling and laughing throughout most of the film. See more
Rey P Apr 14, 2017 Pure entertainment. I liked this movie, and it was very fun and silly to see. However, it can sometimes get caught up in the Muppet slapstick. See more
