Well-respected businessman Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) has a secret: Beneath his family-man facade lurks a murderous alter-ego named Marshall (William Hurt). Brooks struggles with his addiction to killing, but Marshall enjoys his grisly hobby too much to let go. Finally, Brooks resolves to commit one final murder, but a voyeur (Dane Cook) witnesses it and blackmails him to continue. With a detective (Demi Moore) hot on his trail, Brooks/Marshall must spin an increasingly elaborate web.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The setup is intriguing, but Mr. Brooks overstuffs itself with twists and subplots, becoming more preposterous as it goes along.

The good news: there are many twists, turns, subplots and surprises that the coming attractions don't even hint at. The bad news: these twists and turns are so preposterous, or so irrelevant, that they undermine the movie they're meant to tart up. Go to Full Review

Costner gives a nicely underplayed performance and the film is well enough made to be watchable, if only to find out what enormity will be perpetrated next, and by whom. Go to Full Review

Costner's double-act with Hurt is a wicked pleasure, like The Odd Couple with a psychopathic twist. Go to Full Review

Brooks is ultimately even scarier because his family life - or the facade behind which he hides - is so incredibly normal. Go to Full Review

While Costner does his part, ultimately "Brooks" fails -- with a convoluted plot that seems more preposterous the more you think about it. Go to Full Review

George S Apr 24, 2019 decent movie but terrible ending...so just how much of the movie was in his dream? all of it or just the last couple minutes? stupid. also, how did he move all of dane cook's furniture out of his apartment without him noticing? I give it 1 star, strictly for being able to watch dane cook get killed. See more
Albus P Feb 2, 2019 Loved this movie. Kept my attention
Draco S Nov 20, 2018 Mr. Brooks is played by Kevin Costner, and he is a serial killer by night, a popular, intelligent self-righteous man of the community by day. He goes by the name Earl when not in killing mode. To make matters even more complicated Mr. Brooks is a persona arisen by a devil voice within Earl- and he is played(not just voiced but physically portrayed) by William Hurt. In one of his outings Brooks is caught in the act of murder by a photographer and then becomes entangled by the law- mainly one lady played by Demi Moore. With actors of such class there is no reason to doubt that the audiences will be kept captivated- and they are. The cinematography, pacing and direction is excellent, and it is surprising that the director Bruce Evans has only made 2 films including this one. (Pretty cool thriller). See more

George R Nov 4, 2018 Interesting movie, but it was never explained why Mr. Brooks was so convinced his daughter was a murderer after the police interview. Perhaps something was edited out. William Hurt was the best part of this movie. See more
Oct 29, 2018 I'm pulling rank. I'm a bonafide psychologist who once worked maximum security. In Texas. Need I say more? This character is our worst nightmare. Intelligent. Rich. Controlled enough not to violate his own rules to avoid capture. Ruthless. What do you think those presidents and ceos do in their offices each day? Not enough appreciation for this movie. Every time I see it, I appreciate it more. See more
