Critics Consensus

A love-it-or-hate-it experience, Moulin Rouge is all style, all giddy, over-the-top spectacle. But it's also daring in its vision and wildly original.

Moulin Rouge is an audacious, snappy visual and emotional feast of dishes both familiar and fresh. Go to Full Review
Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Sep 5, 2023
Kidman and McGregor sparkle together; some songs enchant, a fine supporting cast give us some laughs, but it's not enough. There is nothing to savour, to reflect on. It's a film where style is in search of an idea. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, the human component of Moulin Rouge is dwarfed by director Luhrmann's outlandish visuals and virtuoso use of music. It's unlikely that any other film this year will offer such a feast for the senses. Go to Full Review

The story is filled with heartache, romance, jealousy and life...while some of it gets a little dull in the middle, overall it’s Luhrmann at his best. Go to Full Review

Baz Luhrmann makes sure that everything that comes before the tragic ending is gleaming with beauty and lavishness. Go to Full Review

This movie is super strange and the only explanation to its strangeness is that it works in seven or eight different ways, some of them good and some of them bad. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Hagrid S Apr 20, 2019 *GASP* Something original. 'Tis cannot be! From the extremely entertaining musical numbers, great performances, pleasing visuals just how plain over-the-top it can get. Who does Baz Luhrmann think he is, making a movie that isn't a sequel, remake, reboot, part of a cinematic universe or based off of a book or a comic? But seriously though, Moulin Rouge! is good. The only flaws are the late '90s/early 2000s music video style editing can be too much sometimes never taking a break and the fact that the script leaves us a nice little spoiler at the beginning of the movie. Otherwise, I really liked this movie. See more
Ron M Apr 16, 2019 Silly fairy tale which is unnecessarily long, dull and boring. The set and the camera are good, but the movie has nothing else of importance. It's just bullshit. See more
Anakin R Mar 8, 2019 A price of your soul must be missing if you did not enjoy this movie. This jukebox musical was totally unexpected and changed the game for movie musicals doing better than anyone predicted and set off a string of musical hits including Chicago. Nicole Kidman was robbed of an Oscar for this one as well as Baz who signature style from the two previous red curtain entries ( Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet) and steps it up to the next level, creating a vibrant wonderful film thatâ(TM)s a delight to both the eyes and ears. Dare I say a masterpiece. See more
Finn W Feb 16, 2019 The lightning, acting, music, choreography, and costumes makes this one of the best films ever made.

Theodore S Jan 12, 2019 The tale of a prostitute and a writer. Both who face challenges regarding their social expectations and stature.
