This is no failure, but a nice slice-of-life miniature that falls a bit short...

It passes like a lazy afternoon spent gently high. There's not much this movie wants to accomplish, but it maintains a mood that sets the mind at ease.

A lush, lyrical look at the "gothic" South, Juri Beythein's cinematography is breathtaking, dazzling with texture and depth as he captures the blue skies, silken waters and green grasses of the region, all laced with the shadows and weight of life.

The film seems more like a languid cinematography reel than a fleshed out narrative film.

This movie has a raw unscripted flow that defies the typical Hollywood movie and creates an authenticity that is rarely seen in films today.

While the story is sweet and simple, its rendering and execution are so nuanced and rich, this movie has stayed with me for weeks. I still feel like I'm floating along on the river, drifting through this gorgeous place, sifting through the lucid dream world of the film maker and cinematographer. And it's amazing to me that this kind of bleak subject matter can be infused with such sweetness and hope. Heartbreak and loss have never lifted me up quite like this. I can't wait to see the film again, so I can really sort through the smaller details and cultural references.
