Critics Consensus

Despite an effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

Let's just say that Mortal Kombat is "way cool" (something I am rarely inclined to do) and leave it at that. Go to Full Review

The result has a pleasing, unpretentious B-movie verve, putting a new sheen on the old-time Saturday-matinee serial. Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat isn't the worst movie of the year, but it's easily the most forgettable. Go to Full Review

It’s two hours of impressive martial arts, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s exceptional performance as Shang Tsung, and the head-bumping riff of Techno Syndrome. Go to Full Review

This picture is based on a best-selling video game, though I could believe that it was inspired by Jayne Austin's novel "Sententiousness and Insensitivity." Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat is probably the best film ever derived from a video game, but that's a pretty small pea patch of which to be the prince. Go to Full Review

Hermione R Apr 28, 2019 To be fair, it offers some guilty pleasure fighting sequences an a solid soundtrack to match its atmosphere. But we have a movie with a terribly laughable plot, uninspiring effects, poor characterization, and some of the worst acting and dialogue imaginable. Its based on a video game, what do you expect. At least its not the worst we've ever seen. See more
Hagrid R Feb 12, 2019 Honestly it's pretty bad, even by video game or martial arts movie standards. But it is fun to watch at times.
Draco W Jan 30, 2019 Best movie based video game.
See more

Theodore R Dec 30, 2018 Sure, the plot doesn't make a lick of sense, the slapstick choreography is a far cry from the fighter's famed ultra-violence, and the dialogue is mostly lazy quips and clips from the actual game, but if the source material is at bottom a button smasher, then this muddle is about as dumb and just as fun.
