What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though original and full of bizarre visuals, Monkeybone is too shapeless a movie, with unengaging characters and random situations that fail to build up laughs.

It is a puzzling melange of live action and cartoon, real life and fantasy that is almost stupefyingly incoherent. Go to Full Review

You can almost see money dripping off the walls of the sets and cybersets in this special-effects extravaganza. Go to Full Review

The design is often brilliant, although the film is nowhere near as tasteless or funny as it ought to be. Go to Full Review

It’s a lot of fun, even though it’s so damn weird at times I’m glad I didn’t see this as a kid so it wouldn’t give me uncontrollable nightmares. Brendan Fraser gives a delightful performance in the kind of role only he could really pull off. Go to Full Review

Monkeybone doesn't make a lot of sense, and, worse, makes little creative use of the contrast between animation and action. Go to Full Review

Luke S Sep 9, 2018 Super underrated, in my opinion. This would have been a 3 when it came out, but now it seems so much better comparing to the CRAP that's being made. See more
Kylo G Sep 4, 2017 Surreal comedy with a lot going for it. It reminded me of Cool World - another guilty pleasure that the critics hate.
Hagrid R Aug 1, 2017 This is easily Henry Selick's worst film but the visuals when we are introduced to this bizarre, fantasy world gives the same visual charm and delight he always brings to the table. See more
Hermione W Apr 8, 2017 I loved it. Sure it's not a GREAT movie. I will admit it's bad. But it was a lot of fun and absolutely fantastic to look at. There was a lot of creativity that went into this movie and the animation was super! It was SO CLOSE to being a good movie, it just...wasn't. See more
Anakin M Jan 6, 2017 this is disgusting. i hate it. i don't ever want to finish it. it destroys everything that i love about cinema.
Poe M Sep 13, 2016 Oh hell no! Brendan Fraser is in the movie. The coma, heaven, and hell as "downtown", maybe just like the Neverhood. Monkeybone trapped in Stu's body (similar to Captain Underpants). See more
