When vigilante land baron David Braxton (John McLiam) hangs one of the best friends of cattle rustler Tom Logan (Jack Nicholson), Logan's gang decides to get even by purchasing a small farm next to Braxton's ranch. From there the rustlers begin stealing horses, using the farm as a front for their operation. Thomas McGuane's brilliant script operates on a sort of sliding time scale, reaching back to the early pioneer days or forward to the present to illustrate the implications of this proposition. Go to Full Review

A Western-as-capitalist-critique piece shanghaied by Marlon Brando's eccentric bounty hunter trying on brogues, mumus, and buckskin Nudie suits. Go to Full Review

The fact of the matter is, Brando's campy performance continues to enliven otherwise tepid material. As his foil, Nicholson is also enigmatic. Go to Full Review

Ron S Feb 14, 2019 Interesting cast and a spooky western story of cattle rustlers, regulators, murder, love, and revenge.
Anakin S Nov 14, 2018 Interesting and offbeat western with good performances but an uncertain tone: is it a comedy? At times John Williams' score overeggs the farce, and Brando doesn't even try to hide the fact that he's reading his lines from cue cards. Kathleen Lloyd (what happened to her?) Is very touching and attractive as Nicholson's love interest, and Harry Dean Stanton gives another fine and understated cameo as one of the horse rustlers. Nothing quite gels but it's never less than interesting, and occasionally sublime. See more
Anakin S Apr 25, 2017 Famous for the teaming of Brando and Jack but little else.Slightly entertaining and more than a bit boring.
Draco S Feb 24, 2017 good modern western and brando is amazing 3rd act work from him
