What to Know

Critics Consensus

While visually dazzling, there isn't enough story to hang all the fancy effects on.

Could be Exhibit A for anyone arguing the case that modern filmmaking lacks a strong sense of story. Go to Full Review

Leonidas walks this tightrope quite engagingly, showing us a girl on the cusp of womanhood, torn between two competing needs -- to become an adult, to remain a child, to vilify, to revere. Go to Full Review

McKean's inexperience as a director trips the film. There is so much going on that the viewer can't take in all the imagery, and McKean's devotion to his skewed vision slows the story to a crawl. Go to Full Review

George S Mar 24, 2019 So I just watched this movie for the first time the other day and it has not aged well. The visuals are nightmarish and imaginitive but it's so hard to look at the 2005 graphics now. I was watching it in a theatre and I had to walk out after I found out there was another hour left. All of the fog effects and bright lights made me sick to look at and only barely hid the awful texturing. If they had gone all animated I feel like it would have looked better because the live action I feel did not fit into the space well, I could barely even concentrate on the story. I know they probably put a lot of work into this but it would have been so much better if they just stayed live action and stayed away from so much dirty plastic looking digital graphics. So yeah watch with caution if you haven't seen it yet, you can only really laugh at how bad it is now. See more
Albus G Jan 16, 2019 The visuals are just fantastic at times and feel a bit like watching a surrealist painting come to life, but I was pretty underwhelmed other than that. Tries to be clever and charming but comes off silly and dull. Probably would have been a good candidate back in my college days when we'd light up and watch a visually trippy flick with the sound off and play equally trippy music instead. See more
Hermione M Aug 26, 2018 A surreal story (as one might expect given the creators) about the circus, illness, dreaming, and drawing. It's interesting, and pretty, but not amazing. See more
Aug 16, 2018 I rate this movie with an, eh. It's not good but its not bad either. I don't like the visual effects or the cast and the pacing of this movie. However this movie does have the potential for an original fantasy movie that takes place in a strange world. The coming of age story was told in the first six minutes of the movie, with allot of vague plot-points and foreshadowing. Another problem i have with this movie is that so much is going on, so many characters doing things and so many places, that its really sad that i'm more interested in exploring a world made of abstract art rather than paying attention to the bland heroes and the not so creative story. Honestly, i wish they did puppets instead of cheap eye-sores of effects. Millions of dollars was spent to make this movie anyway, so why not get the moneys worth in funny puppets? I recommend seeing this movie at least once, if you can stomach the visual effects The Asylum movie studio uses. Its a pretty easy going fantasy movie, not allot what i wanted to see but it has its moments when its not bad. See more
Draco L Aug 16, 2018 A triumph of execution over imagination. Neil Gaiman stories often lose something when translated to the screen, as Stardust demonstrates.. No doubt seemed like a good idea but it's somewhat dull and amateurish. I'm knicking ststs off for the awful score too. See more
Jun 7, 2018 Watched a half hour into the movie and turned it off. The plot is garbage, and the "dream world" is trying way too hard to be crazy and interesting. The CG is terrible for a movie made in 2005. See more
