What to Know

Critics Consensus

A mature deconstruction of the conventional rom-com, Materialists provides its trio of swoon-worthy stars some of their meatiest material yet while reaffirming Celine Song as a modern master of relationship dramas.

Materialists is rickety stuff, buckling from beginning to end beneath its maker’s weighty aspirations. Go to Full Review
Peter Travers The Travers Take Oct 31, 2025

Filmmaker Celine Song dons a metaphorical technician’s coat, does a chemistry test on three gorgeous movie stars—Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal—and then waits for the lab results. Sad to say, the romcom fizz didn’t make it. Go to Full Review
Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Oct 7, 2025
Materialists lacks the satisfyingly drawn characters of Austen, the elegant wit and spite of the screwballs -- and the chewy complexity and formal brio of the exquisite Past Lives. Go to Full Review

Tina Burke Mamamia Sep 30, 2026
For those hoping to see a free-wheeling rom-com akin to How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days or You've Got Mail, you might leave the cinema unsatisfied. I know a few people who did. But to me, Materialists is perfection. Go to Full Review
Luke Goodsell The Saturday Paper Jul 23, 2026
For better and sometimes worse this is every bit a Celine Song movie. Unlike James L. Brooks or James Ivory, the writer-director isn’t ultimately committed to finding the humanity in characters who don’t fit her conception of good people. Go to Full Review
