Young Martin (John Amplas) is entirely convinced that he is an 84-year-old blood-sucking vampire. Without fangs or mystical powers, Martin injects women with sedatives and drinks their blood through wounds inflicted with razor blades. After moving to Braddock, Penn., to live with his superstitious uncle (Lincoln Maazel), who also believes Martin is a vampire, Martin tries to prey exclusively on criminals and thugs but stumbles when he falls for a housewife (Sara Venable).

What to Know

Critics Consensus

George A. Romero's contribution to vampire lore contains the expected gore and social satire -- but it's also surprisingly thoughtful, and boasts a whopper of a final act.

A film that helped to reinvent and reshape the vampire mythos, Martin is another example of Romero at the top of his game. Go to Full Review

A film that was caught-up in the UK’s Video nasty kerfuffle in the 1980s, Romero often referred to Martin as his favourite film. It may lack the visceral thrills of some of his other work, it’s easy to see why the filmmaker would think so fondly of it. Go to Full Review

Han G Jan 16, 2019 Good satire but lacking in too many scares. An unconventional vampire film.
Albus W Sep 11, 2018 Whether a "vampire" or a modern Frankenstein's creature, the protagonist of Martin is in fact a man-made proverbial monster, created by an anguished, frightened society in a deeply troubled era, repressed by conservative religious values and alienated for being what he is. Albus S Oct 31, 2017 It's an intelligent piece of cinema. I'd call it anti-vampire movie with great social commentary as is expected of Romero. And I want to explicitly underline this fact: commentary, not parody or satire that is way easier to do. Commentary provokes thoughts and parody\satire usually just makes fun of whatever it is mocking. This film's commentary works on multiple levels, from the obvious anti-church message to more secular themes like ostracism and prejudice. Romero is indeed a great master of overlaying a horror story onto society's current issues and diseases. It's an alternative look on the hackneyed vampire genre. Martin is an almost centenary vampire. In this age his "disease" could be taken more seriously with scientific approach but superstitions are strong as ever. See more
George M Oct 9, 2017 An odd but compelling movie.
