With a diegesis mapped along the mental contours of its protagonist, Martha Marcy May Marlene harkens back to Pasolini's notion of the cinema of poetry--and achieves it beautifully. Go to Full Review

A psychological drama that builds its labyrinth with a fairly organic performance by Elizabeth Olsen, but its narrative often remains in an overly calculated zone that, in its register of circularity, never takes risks. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Elizabeth Olsen stuns in her feature debut in a film that perfectly embodies PTSD. While the murder sequence doesn't fully work, the way Durkin shifts between timelines and the "before they were famous" cast makes this a must-see Go to Full Review

Finn W Oct 30, 2018 Worst ending of all time. Horrible . Waste of time.
Draco W Oct 21, 2018 Martha Marcy May Marlene is a movie that has everything going for it (except maybe an ending, I'll get to that later). It is a psychological thriller that will send shivers down your spine via an all too realistic story line. The movie opens with Martha, played by Elizabeth Olsen, running away from a cult she has lived with for 2 years. She finds a pay phone and calls her older sister who takes her to stay with her and her husband at their lake house. Martha dispels nothing of her life the past 2 years, all the while being haunted by insanely creepy flashbacks. Old habits die hard. Adjusting to a normal way of life proves to be a nearly impossible task for Martha. Martha's sister, meanwhile, attempts to dig into the root of the problem but is continually shut off. Further escalating the plot, turns out this menacing cult misses their Martha and is searching high and low for her. The movies highest points come the flashbacks. John Hawkes is terrific as the cults absurdly demented leader whose only goal is to make all his minions bow at his feet. It is a dark film that will really sink it's teeth into you. Some parts may be hard to watch for some, but overall, Martha shines. Or does it? The ending leaves it up to the viewer to decide what happens. Your opinion pending, this could either be one of the best or worst movies you've seen in awhile. But if I can add my two cents, it's definitely worth the journey to find out. See more
George R Sep 17, 2018 its harrowing psychoanalysis is enough to leave you bewildered in its mayhem.. Martha Marcy May Marlene Martha Marcy May Marlene is a character driven drama about a girl who contacts her sister after disappearing for two years, as she finds herself at the bottom of the pit. It is utterly pleasing and soothing to encounter such a calm and layered tale told with such panache that it doesn't seem fictitious at all. The metaphorical satire soars through entire feature with maker sitting back and enjoying on eschewing its mythological characters. The uncertainty keeps the crisp alive on the air among the characters where it doesn't need any appalling creatures, to give you goosebumps; its harrowing psychoanalysis is enough to leave you bewildered in its mayhem. The background score may as well be non-existent, but has mesmerizing cinematography, stunning camera work and fine editing in its pros section. Olsen's performance is plausible where she takes you to newer territories if not always with conviction, but it still is palpable to its eerie bubble. Paulson is a strong supporter but Hawkes with his stand out moments, steals the limelight. The narrative is strong, gripping, layered and adaptive that emits non-pretentious policies comparing the pros and cons of current social life. Swooping up all the angles and perspective of the characters; depicted through parallel screenwriting, it offers a much smarter and mature concept to the audience which is explored to the core. The transparency of the structure as it weaves the sequence in front of the audience, the potential to speak volume without uttering a word on screen and the metaphorical cinematography that acts like a mirror to the characters are the high points of the feature. Despite of split into two different territories, Martha Marcy May Marlene glides through the roof with its ideology that communicates clearly since there are no other notorious business; Durkin is here to tell a story. Rey S Apr 15, 2018 4/15/2018 This movie had my partner glancing at the TV while at work mainly because of the excellent camera shots at the beginning and eventually because of the unique storytelling. The blunt ending just capped the ride and was probably made to allow the viewers to empathize into second guessing. See more
Han G Mar 17, 2018 Watch this if you're into bummers, disappointment and cliffhanger endings that will never be resolved (it's not exactly a 'sequel' type movie). It was a really great story and great acting- I mostly really enjoyed it up until the end. I just wanted to see something good happen. I'm sure tons of people will love this- I guess it's just not my kind of movie. See more
