A young man and his younger siblings who have concealed the death of their mother to remain together are plagued by a sinister presence in their home.

Critics Consensus

Marrowbone's effective setting and strong cast can't make up for thinly conceived characters and a story short on genuine scares.

It is a sensational piece of genre subterfuge, the narrative an increasingly byzantine maze overflowing in deft twists and turns.

There are reminders here - as there were in the recent Irish horror The Lodgers - that the haunted house movie still contains possibilities. Neither will it, however, keep you awake at night like The Orphanage.

What begins as an innocent, old-fashioned children's tale takes a detour to creepy, disturbing places in this psychological horror from the writer of 2007 hit The Orphanage.

This film is almost impossible to talk about without spoiling. Suffice to say, Marrowbone does well what few other movies bother to attempt. I was incredibly invested in the characters by the end and despite a couple cringey "horror movie moments," I thought this was an excellent movie. Glad I finally got the chance to catch up with it. PRO TIP: Try to go in blind if possible.

Good; nearly very good.

Beautifully done. I cared about all of the characters even after the secret was revealed. So many of these movies stop trying or drop the ball once the reveal is made. Marrowbone had more to give and did it wonderfully.

Very interesting and creative for its genre but doesn't deliver anything great due to elongated sequences and lack of scares.
