Critics Consensus

A surfeit of ideas contributes to Margaret's excessive run time, but Anna Paquin does a admirable job of guiding viewers through emotional hell.

Knotty, ambitious and trading in messy human truths, it's the work of a master dramatist. Here's hoping Lonergan's next one reaches us a little faster. Go to Full Review

Margaret is less about plot mechanics than about the virtuosity of the dialogue, the complexity of the characters, and the detail and depth of their untidy world. Go to Full Review

It’s a powerful, provocative, ambitious drama set in the shadow of September 11, 2001, a marvelously messy film about the messiness of emotions and people and relationships, especially as they are tested in extreme circumstances. Go to Full Review

[This] is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a William Gaddis adaptation, [...] [in which people] talk to each other and to Lisa [an astounding Anna Paquin], and Lisa talks to them, but nobody’s listening. Go to Full Review

This is a movie so dense and somewhat sloppy, somewhat wonderfully so, that I don't know I can do it any justice Go to Full Review

Apr 19, 2019 80% of the movie can be taken out. Boring and pretentious.
Han R Feb 9, 2019 Some genuinely enjoyable and thought-provoking moments, supported by an extremely well-written and often well-performed script, that kind of create a Short Cuts effect, though with the focus on a single person, convincingly played by Paquin, who is almost detestable at times, so convincingly does she play the traumatised adolescent who, as a child, is unable to see her own degree of responsibility in the events she helps catalyse, and instead blames everyone else for her issues. Brilliantly put down though with a line which runs something like "'I'm not a character in the opera of your life". See more
Kylo R Jul 16, 2018 Anna Paquin exposes her acting chops in this rather meandering Kenneth Lonergan drama.
Albus M Jul 12, 2018 Looked at the timer at least 10 times to see how much longer I would have to put up with this, and I watched the 2 1/2 hr version. Don't think I would've survived the 3 hr torture. It was unreasonably long, it was like a brainstorm of ideas put in film, but with 0 connection or purpose. And sorry ya'll but the main character is so annoying it was an absolute miracle this movie even reached more than $300,000 box office. My ears actually hurt from listening to her for 150 minutes. Theodore G Jul 7, 2018 Excellent dialogue and strict attention to realism make Margaret well worth a viewing and an excellent platform to show Anna Paquin's talent. See more
Hagrid G Apr 9, 2018 What a harrowing movie. Draining, exhausting, hitting way too close to home. First I have to say that I watched the director's cut which is about 3 hours long. It was a very challenging viewing. This movie is incredibly dense, featuring so much dialog, so many interactions, even outside of the main plot of this movie. You hear strangers' conversations about their own tangles of life. I'll say it early, my only possible complaint with this film is that it might've been a bit disorganized. I can't even imagine how difficult it was to splice all the material in this story together, how to edit this gargantuan film. The fact that they managed to get it done in a watchable fashion is enough. Besides that, it was probably one of the most challenging movies I've seen recently. I cringed, I felt awkward, I wanted to distract myself from it, I had to force myself through some scenes, and that might sound like a really negative experience, but it's all due to the stark authenticity of the movie. Kenneth Lonergan shows that he understands human emotions and relations to their very core, and he managed to show it to us with his incredible cast. The story told here, the relationships explored, they were all such crystal clear depictions that I felt challenged. These are things I usually try not to think about too much, things I get enough of in real life, and to see it all represented here so well was disturbing. And all this from the point of view of an American teenager living in NYC. The music was used really well here, it was helped create this miserable miasma which surrounded the film. Classical pieces, operas, all coming and going at the right moments. The other technical aspects of this movie were pretty adequate, but nothing too special to talk about here. It was just an incredible character study of a whole lot of characters, a draining exploration of heavy themes. See more
