On the day that their parents die, sisters Lilly and Victoria vanish in the woods, prompting a frantic search by their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain). Five years later, miraculously, the girls are found alive in a decaying cabin, and Lucas and Annabel welcome them into their home. Critics Consensus

If you're into old-school scares over cheap gore, you'll be able to get over Mama's confusing script and contrived plot devices.

While [Guillermo Del Toro] only takes an executive producer credit here on Mama, I doubt more involvement would have been helpful.

Hits most of the expected beats of a ghost story of this nature, though the actual design of the titular character is jarring and evocative enough to stay with you well after the credits roll.

Following a common trend in supernatural horror, Mama begins with a novel premise and compelling characters, but then slowly digresses into bankrupt genre clichés, rampant exposition, and formulaic boo! moments.

Mama has a interesting premise and some creative scares but ultimately doesn't bring something new to the horror genre.

'Brought to you by Guillermo del Toro...' 'Directed by the man who has made the new IT'... (that's supposed to be good right?). This must be great! It's not, it's dreadful, it's formulaic and it's laughably bad at points. Avoid at all costs.

Full of cliches... and a soporific final act... That is Mama in a nutshell.

Mama is a supernatural horror/mystery film that delves more so into our tender emotional side . Something that horrors never do. The character "mama" is different on its objective than most other ghost flicks(just kill characters for no apparent reason) And can be misunderstood by viewers. Is it a greedy sinister guardian refusing to share custody or a wrongly treated person turned spirit looking to find eternal child love it could not have during life? It resembles both throughout the story. The ending is unexpected and shocking. I understood the purpose though. Creative and different. Its worth watching.
