What to Know

Critics Consensus

Major Dundee is a Western-type with big war scenes, shot with bombast typical of Sam Peckinpah.

What makes the film... is the young and swaggering Richard Harris as the Irish immigrant and disaffected conscript Benjamin Tyreen. Go to Full Review

Despite the cuts which thin out the final stages of the story, and despite a flabby performance from Richard Harris which very nearly destroys the balance, the film is a fascinating study in the swing of a pendulum. Go to Full Review

Draco L Mar 21, 2019 This is one of my all time favorite War/Western Movies. Sam's attention to detail for production is impeccable The performances are excellent. The Story is good and has Historical relevance that probably escape's most people so it no doubt soars over the "Hollywood In Crowd". Worth watching for the stunt work prior to CG. James Coburn's character steals all scenes he's in like Steve McQueen in Magnificent 7. Senta Berger is lucious and who knew Sgt. Gomez was a Swiss Actor. See more
Feb 1, 2019 The best Western movie ever made!
Han M Oct 17, 2018 This film starring charleton heston is up there with the greatest of john wayne movies
Draco R Feb 1, 2018 Charlton Heston stars as the commanding officer of a prison for Confederate soldiers. When a group of Apache attack and slaughter a nearby army encampment kidnapping a bunch of young boys, he recruits a motley gang of civilians, Confederate prisoners and African-American soldiers under a handful of his officers to track them down. This is 3/4 of a great film. It has an incredible cast ... Richard Harris, James Coburn, Senta Berger, Brock Peters, Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, R.G, Armstrong, L.Q. Jones and Slim Pickens ... and methodically sets up tense conflicts only to have the last half hour completely destroyed by ridiculous studio re-edits. The entire movie sets up for a confrontation that is settled in the most incoherently perfunctory manner. It's a shame because you can see what the film was intended to be and it's clearly a dry run at "The Wild Bunch". See more
