It's worth noting that Kirk Douglas long professed that Lonely Are the Brave contains one of his own favorite performances. Go to Full Review

Such a shocking beginning is the first of many attributes that place this film as the best - and most atypical - western in which Jerry Goldsmith was involved throughout his professional career. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Afterwards, [Kirk Douglas] made no mystery of his love of the film, later declaring it his all-time favorite of his work. And why not? Go to Full Review
Isabel Quigly The Spectator Jul 13, 2018
Lonely are the Brave, a film fairly stuffed with symbolism, shows how inevitably the heroic, human, in its real sense unsophisticated world of the West and its values are crushed by the synthetic, the mechanical, the wasteful and vicious in modern life. Go to Full Review

Kirk Douglas produced and starred in this elegiac Western, scripted by Dalton Trumbo, which laments the vanishing Old West, its heroes and their mores, replaced by a modern world dominated by progress and technology. Go to Full Review

Albus M Mar 26, 2019 So another in our continuing study of scrips by Dalton Trumbo. very good. But, oh, Whisky, I can't get you out of my mind!!! Why didn't you just get off and walk Whisky across? That is what I kept screaming at the TV See more

Draco R Oct 2, 2018 I went here to look for a Dalton Trumbo script, and I discover that it is an antecessor for Rambo, just forgetting the part related to the war, and focused in a West world that has disappeared under modern influence. So, much more innocent, but also with an interesting message. See more
Finn P Jul 5, 2018 Western moderno en blanco y negro, una joyita!
Hermione L May 6, 2018 not sure how gina rowlands character fits in, except for making her point that men are only tolerable to make babies. But overall, the film kept me initerested without special effects while carrying the message that by 1962 the american west as portrayed by hollywood was gone. most of today's audiences could not appreciate the rugged individualist of that bygone era, one where you remove your gunstock and stick it down your boot in order to compensate for a bullet-shot ankle just to keep going. i think douglas loved this movie because that's who he believed he was - the son of immigrants, pioneers in their own way - and hoped he carried their individualist spirit. I live in Tijeras canyon, east of albuquerque "the duke city", where the sandia mountains he crossed was filmed. They called it "scissors" canyon in the movie, which translated from spanish is "tijeras". other than interstate 40 going through that canyon, it and the sandia mountains are much the same today. there are still men on horseback herding cattle in the area, but there are just as many on quads doing the same job. such is life.
