After the three young Baudelaire siblings are left orphaned by a fire in their mansion, they are carted off to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). Unfortunately, Olaf is a cruel, scheming man only after the inheritance that the eldest Baudelaire, Violet (Emily Browning), is set to receive. The children escape and find shelter with their quirky Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) and, subsequently, their phobic Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep), but Olaf is never far behind.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although it softens the nasty edges of its source material, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is a gothic visual treat, and it features a hilariously manic turn from Jim Carrey as the evil Count Olaf.

It's all a bit superficial, but highly entertaining, wickedly funny, and alluring enough to make you want to start reading the books. Go to Full Review

Carrey is just playing Carrey (which is great if you like him and obnoxious if you don't), but the child actors are solid, and the costumes, make-up and art direction are outstanding Go to Full Review

This film is endlessly dark and gloomy for a kids story. But somehow, it works. Go to Full Review

Abraham L Apr 15, 2019 This was a ok movie. If you like the books you will also think it is ok. The show is better. I feel like it is rushed. There is 2 count olaf costumes both of them there for only 15 minutes. So not rewatchable. Overall it was enjoyable but boring if that makes sense. See more
Hermione G Mar 22, 2019 Visually fun, and acted just as enjoyably the plot moves way too fast to care (since their cramming three books into one) about anyone aside from the kids and the villain, but they do enough to hold this film up. See more
Mar 21, 2019 I feel it didn't fully capture the spirit of the books as it could've. It was just ok
Poe S Jan 12, 2019 A series of unfortunate events led to me watching this movie.
Albus M Nov 18, 2018 altho rather shallow in execution, it is a very faithful adaptation (with the exception of jim carrey as count olaf, of course)
Hermione W Nov 13, 2018 Jim Carrey is funny but it's a pretty average movie
