What to Know

Critics Consensus

LBJ loses sight of its complicated subject, ignoring the more intriguing aspects of his personality and career in favor of a frustratingly ordinary biopic treatment.

While the shooting of JFK is the dark shadow of this movie, what unfolds on screen is less about the 35th president than the man who replaced him. Go to Full Review

[Woody] Harrelson gives an impressionistic performance. He doesn't look much like LBJ, even after the make-up, nor can he bring his voice to the same low register, but he understands the coyote cunning of the man. Go to Full Review

LBJ is a valuable approach to one of the lesser known presidential periods in the US in which the legal and political focus was given to a transcendental issue such as the Civil Rights Act... [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

George L Apr 7, 2019 Straight and professionally made, but a bit adulatory biopic focussed on LBJ's political transition as John F. Kennedy's Vice President and successor; it could have been so much more, although it is indeed a treat to watch Woody Harrelson give this politician some life. See more
Anakin S Feb 17, 2019 STRENGTHS: Strong performances all around and snappy writing. I't doesn't do anything crazy inventive with the camera work, but not exactly bad. some interesting shots. It tries much less than vice at comedy yet still turns out funnier. WEAKNESSES: Didn't focus on many more contr See more
Han G Feb 10, 2019 Rob Reiner returns to the White House's politics to reflect the story of reluctant presidency, successfully relying on Harrelson's beneficially charismatic, transformative performance with decent makeup for a fulfilled role. Although, the story demonstrates a timely forgotten meaning and delivers minimal punches, it couldn't help but be bothered on the questionable length of focus of maintaining the accuracy of the main figures' accurate role besides the basic necessary facts towards the validated worthiness of telling the story with little presentation. Kylo M Jan 7, 2019 Can't teach an old dog new tricks? LBJ really had a change of heart about racial rights...Woody plays him well.
Hermione P Sep 22, 2018 From Rob Reiner comes the incredibly compelling political thriller LBJ. The story follows Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson in the mist of the Kennedy assassination as he's swept into the presidency and has to decide how to proceed with Kennedy's social agenda and what kind of president he wants to be. Starring Woody Harrelson, Jeffrey Donovan, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film has an impressive cast that delivers some really good performances. And, the script is especially well-written and uses flashbacks to cover Johnson's political career and history with the Kennedys. However, it kind of skirts around the Vietnam War, focusing instead on Johnson as the workhorse who turned Kennedy's dream into a reality with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There's a rose-colored tint to LBJ, but it's still a fascinating look at the man who shepherded the country through an extraordinary crisis. See more
Kylo P Aug 31, 2018 I enjoyed seeing a different perspective on LBJ, but I didn't feel it took into account so much more of who he was and why.
