What to Know

Critics Consensus

Passionate and powerfully acted, Laurence Anyways sometimes strains to achieve its narrative ambitions (and fill its three-hour running time), but ultimately succeeds.

"Laurence Anyways" is a formidable display of French Canadian director Xavier Dolan's prodigious talents, but also a case study of a young talent still finding his way to greatness. He'll get there one day, soon, but this film doesn't quite do it. Go to Full Review

It's all too much, really, including its 21/2-hour-plus running time. But it's also engrossing, an ultimately tender story of a transsexual's transformation over 10 years and its effect on him and the people around him. Go to Full Review

It is a beautiful and daring French-language film about the enduring power of love that trespasses the boundaries of societal conventions. Go to Full Review

Dolan's films -- which have a touch of Pedro Almodóvar and Wong Kar-wai -- are always exaggerated, capricious, arbitrary, showy, but also, beautiful, intense, and unafraid of being ridiculed. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Abraham R Oct 5, 2018 Yes Xavier Dola, I admit you are a good director. Colors, scenes, musics: everything is just right, powerful, with an 80s feeling. But at the end this is a very basic "love" story with a wig and nail polish, so there was no reason to make it last for almost three hours, was it? And it is a shame because it is a good film, but could have been way better! See more

Leia S Sep 30, 2017 is this too long? yes, most definitely. but it's touching and poignant and sweet in the best way possible. a queer film not to be missed. See more
Abraham L May 14, 2017 a tour de force of acting, cinematography, and storytelling.
Ron R Feb 24, 2017 There is so much to like about this movie. The performances are incredible. The conceits, completely arresting. So much passion and torment. So much life. Such beautiful compositions. This is what cinema should be. See more
Albus L Feb 18, 2017 A passionate film about love, freedom and the pressure of social norms. It shows in a heart-felt manner how difficult it is to pursue one's freedom and to be faithful to one's true self. Skillfully acted by Suzanne Clément and Melvil Poupaud. As usual in Dolan's films, music perfectly conveys the moods of the various turning points and never fails to match visually powerful scenes. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a deep, beautiful and bold movie. See more
