What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Last Winter creatively and effectively uses horror tactics -- fear, tension, anticipation, and just enough gore -- to shock, but never repulse, its audience.

Fessenden, who directed, produced, cowrote, edited and even has a part in the film rightly values mood at least as much as he does delivering more abominable snow monsters. Go to Full Review

The problem is that the ghostly culprit, some sort of nature spirit, isn't nearly as terrifying as the arguments that Pollack makes, or the fact that the ice in such places really is weakening. Go to Full Review

Die-hard greenies may find this as unsettling as it's meant to be. For everyone else, it's closer to an atmospheric act of recycling. Go to Full Review

It may at times come across a bit heavy-handed, but its message is still a timely and valuable one, showing a microcosm driven to total collapse by a planet that’s ready to kick humans out of the ecosystem for good. Go to Full Review

Shot on location in Iceland and unfortunately hobbled by a bit of third act CGI that compromises the rather compelling ecological message. Go to Full Review

It's a pro-environmental apocalyptic shocker that works as a thinking man's ghost story pic. Go to Full Review

Hagrid G Dec 1, 2018 Sometimes confusing rant on global warming.
Kylo R Jul 12, 2018 Unbelievably bad. Supposed to be scary but just pathetically dull. The fake suspense was awful. So glad i rented from the library and didnt pay for this awful film. See more
Hermione L Mar 26, 2017 Wow, this movie was really bad. The plot was dumb, the acting was mediocre, the CGI antagonists were lame, and above all else the editing was some of the worst I've ever seen. The movie kept fading to black then abruptly cutting into a scene like it was a TV movie with the commercials cut out. I appreciate the environmental message, but this movie missed the mark on every level. See more
Leia S Sep 18, 2013 Fessenden has crafted a horror film that relies on the setting and atmosphere to create all the tension. The film is quite intent on playing it out slowly and not providing much in the way of a explanation. The cast is great and the horror elements are unsettling but the pacing is way too slow. The film has that open ended conclusion that is quite over the top and never gives you any closure which is a shame. The film works best when it is at the station and once they move away the tension falls apart. 31-03-2018. See more
