What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite the relaxed, easy chemistry of stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, Larry Crowne is surprisingly bland and conventional.

Tom Hanks directs himself in this, and also wrote the original script, so if you ever thought you can't have too much Hanks here is something else to blow your mind: you so, so can. Go to Full Review

An exceedingly minor entry on already impressive resums. Go to Full Review
Anthony Lane The New Yorker Jul 18, 2011
To pluck romantic comedy from the jaws of a social crisis is a laudable project, worthy of Preston Sturges, and it's a pity that this featherlight drama-written by Tom Hanks and Nia Vardalos, and directed by Hanks himself-should falter in its task. Go to Full Review

After appearing together in Charlie Wilson’s War, Hanks and Roberts reunite and display plenty of chemistry in this rather plain, unpretentious, but somewhat uninvolving romantic comedy. Go to Full Review

Draco P Apr 22, 2019 I think the critics and audience got this one wrong. REALLY enjoyed it. The end didn't need to be corny, could have avoided that but looked it to that point a lot. See more
Finn R Jan 6, 2019 In his piece on this lovely piece of avocado milquetoast, and guilty pleasures in general, FilmCritHulk put it well: "I get how most people shrugged it off for its pleasant, genial shine, but give it a fixed eye, and it can foster this constant state of amusement. You watch, your mouth agape, constantly squeaking, 'Wait, what?' All while it continues to invite your curiosity about why these creative decisions were made in the first place." Which is to say: For all its geniality and warmth, at Larry Crowne's whitey-tighty bottom, this movie is just about as bizarre as bizarre comes. Not bad, not unwatchable, not incomprehensibleï¿ 1/2"in fact, all the elements work here, with clever jokes and winning performancesï¿ 1/2"but simply strange. Or to put it in more Freudian terms, the movie is wonderfully uncanny, both an inviting and amiable experience, but one with made of so many off-kilter and unreal choices as to never let you feel quite at home. Rey M Jan 5, 2019 I think the critics are overly harsh on this movie. Yes, the chemistry between tom hanks and Julia Roberts is nonexistent. Yes, some of the jokes fall flat and some scenes are kinda awkward. But this movie has something that most movies now don't. It's clean and wholesome. It's not raunchy or over sexual, it doesn't have curse words every 5 words. I'm not saying those things mean a movie is bad. But this movies childlike innocence gave me a warm feeling that I can't find in most movies nowadays. It's not a great movie. But its innocence make it worthy of a watch if you got time on your hands/ See more
Albus W Jan 4, 2019 Comedy? Not funny enough. Social commentary? Too tin-eared. Tom Hanks, in a rare duff outing, trades on his reputation to get a bunch of decent actors to play risible caricatures. See more
Han R Nov 8, 2018 The script would have been a great read: middle-aged guy loses job and has to find a new path. Academic stamped teacher ends up without her dreams and the man of her dreams. Add two masters of rom-com and a very hot supporting cast. Should be a an emotional ride with a rocket ending. It's a no! Unbelievably flat acting from Tom Hanks and the usually loud Julia Roberts, make this a frustrating experience, because you can tell how great each character has been shaped by that keen-eyed writer Nina. Her wicked My big fat Greek wedding was stereotyping on steroids. The major problem seems to come from a too-light director's hand. One of the worst crimes in film is too be able to "hear" the directions to the cast. And Mr. "Nice-guy" Tom Hanks is playing movie director with no rockets on board.. He's ordered himself into a low-key performance and the rest of the cast has to dampen down the action to match. Instead of a hot Harley Davidson roar, it's a rom-com on warm milk and a putt putt scooter. See more
Luke S Nov 4, 2018 rotten from the core.. Larry Crowne Hanks's rom-com berries dipped more in your typical textbook formula than simplicity, is unfortunately rotten from the core. This is a case of utter misconception. It is conceived with such non-lucid supervision that it scatters before even it stands on its own ground. This romantic tale lacks every bit of freshness and electricity that is actually essential to at least fuel for a head start. It is a complete mess from top to bottom. And as far as humor is concerned, it barely draws out a chuckle from the audience. The sketchy sequences, your usual gags, illogical comments and the aftermath of those one-liners, everything fails so miserably in here that you start questioning its existence. What it does succeed on, is keeping a straight smile on your face throughout the course of the feature. And the credit goes to the beloved stars and their charm that we have been encountering over the years. Hanks chooses style over substance and he regrets it, he has to. As far as performance is concerned, Hanks and Roberts in the lead are giving their all in, but unfortunately it has so sloppy writing, that it is hard to create an impact through mere performance. The characters are one-dimensional and daft at times, and these are just the primary ones, the supporting ones are pawns from head to toe. Their allotted characteristics that they hold on to, is not only predictable but dull too. The conversations are cheesy and are brimmed with corny lines that may not even work for the couples going out on a date for the movie. Armed with benign script, Hanks's execution is comparatively appreciative if nothing outstanding. Larry Crowne is accurately titled, on terms of the incorrect spelling that it contains; it does seem like a big mistake. See more
