What to Know

Critics Consensus

Laggies may not do as much with its ideas as it could, but it's buoyed by a winsome performance from Kiera Knightley, as well as Lynn Shelton's empathetic direction.

Even if the film doesn't leave much to ponder past the closing credits, it's enjoyable while it's unfolding, doing justice to the strengths of Shelton's ever-expanding filmography. Go to Full Review

Shelton's comedy isn't just smart, but cheerfully wise; not just funny, but cleverly and endlessly so. Go to Full Review

Though there are bits to like here and there, 'Laggies' is a movie sorely missing a point. Go to Full Review

Fits the mold of a teen angst film, except the main character Megan is a clever twenty-something who never completely grew out of her angst. Go to Full Review

Albus W Oct 21, 2018 For a romance-comedy, this was pretty good.
Kylo R Sep 19, 2018 In its best moments, this has a light-hearted, endearing sensibility. But it all rests upon a story that is filled with clunky, awkward moments and questionable relationships that never quite add up. See more
Anakin L Aug 4, 2018 Knightley, Moretz, and Rockwell's infectious chemistry is just enough to make up for Laggies' predictable faults.
Kylo R Aug 3, 2018 Wow this movie really was more upsetting than anything. Definitely not a comedy. Mostly people, especially the main Keira Knightley, and her eventual love interest Sam Rockwell acting incredibly irresponsibly and immorally repeatedly. I can appreciate the concept of someone not being able to handle their late twenties very well and feeling confused and trapped in their life, but the film is just scene after scene of really bizarre and disturbing behavior that almost no one in the film seems to call out. Then they end the film by championing a relationship between a single dad and his daughter's 28 year old friend whom he somehow lets stay at their house. No that won't cause any problems for your daughter at all! And to think they actually expect us to believe Knightley and Rockwell are in love after just seven days in the midst of her frequent inability to function like a decent human and member of society is ludicrous. I'd definitely recommend staying away. See more

Luke S Sep 2, 2017 Here you have a megawatt star slumming in a Seattle community theater production on "film" (image capture), a non'rom-com. The question is, why? Knightley is good - she can hardly be otherwise - but wildly miscast, picking-up an American accent to buff-off her inescapable BBC polish. Was she doing someone a favor for this? Her paycheck couldn't have been her usual scale. Chloë's good and she's about the speed of the premise, teen angst to include a 10-yrs-on slacker, the Knightley character who implausibly regresses for awhile. (To see something along this line that's better, go with Drew Barrymore going back to high school in "Never Been Kissed.") Basically this a Lifetime movie that wouldn't make their line-up because for more than an hour it barely, awkwardly makes sense. The last half-hour starts to work and it all ends sweetly. The male characters? What does Lynn Shelton have against real men? She cast 3rd rate loser types to pair with Knightley. It's all a mess - and kinda sad when it's not depressing. This is the 2nd female originated, produced, & directed movie lately that leaves one scratching the head at what's-up with American femininity. "Obvious Child," while nicely crafted, is kinda disturbing while trying to be a latter-day rom-com. Women are far nastier & more mercenary than men and these producer-director-writer gals are hell-bound to show it. Watched 1978's "Foul Play" recently, with Chevy & Goldie. How refreshing to see a real rom-com at Hollywood's polished production best. | - Norm de Guerre See more
