Frustrated with babysitting on yet another weekend night, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenager with an active imagination, summons the Goblins to take her baby stepbrother away. When little Toby actually disappears, Sarah must follow him into a fantastical world to rescue him from the Goblin King (David Bowie). Guarding his castle is the labyrinth itself, a twisted maze of deception, populated with outrageous characters and unknown dangers. To get through it in time to save Toby, Sarah befriends the Goblins, in hopes that their loyalty isn't just another illusion in a place where nothing is as it seems.

Critics Consensus

While it's arguably more interesting on a visual level, Labyrinth provides further proof of director Jim Henson's boundless imagination.

The effects, the sets, and the visual trickery are used to mask conventional stories and hollow characters, which underestimates the audience's ability to spot a fake.

Good Bowie songs help the proceedings, but don't look for Labyrinth to become one of the great fantasy epics of Western Civilization.

In spite of the nifty mazes, cuddly critters and the singin' struttin' Bowie, the buzz word here is boring.

What ultimately makes Labyrinth a memorable, favorite piece of cinema after 40 years is its trust in its audience, young and old, to grapple with ambiguity, to laugh at its oddities, and to feel the pull of its emotional truths.

What Labyrinth lacks in original plotting—which is a lot indeed—it tries to make up in imaginative creatures and sight gags.
