Based on incredible true events, Jérome Salle's gripping new espionage thriller depicts the remarkable story of a French public servant who unwittingly finds himself in conflict with one of the modern era's most powerful and dangerous forces: Russia's FSB. Gilles Lellouche stars as Mathieu, a gregarious and dedicated diplomat who accepts a posting to Irkutsk as the head of Siberia's Alliance Française. He hopes the change will be good for his family and struggling marriage, but before long Mathieu's staging of cultural events and support of artistic expression sees him fall afoul of local authorities. Accused of a terrible crime, he soon realizes someone has fabricated a case with Russia's Federal Security Service -- he has been framed. Arrested, imprisoned and isolated, Mathieu has nowhere to turn. Defending himself is impossible, the French authorities are helpless -- it seems he has no choice: to try and escape.

Critics Consensus

If Kompromat isn't the most consistent -- or consistently believable -- political thriller, deft direction and a tense, fast-paced story make it a generally gripping watch.

It's about the people themselves, and I appreciated that about the film.

The result is cold but competent, which, whether intentional or not, is ultimately apropos of the subject matter.

A well-crafted chase picture that doubles as a fiery warning about the dangers of an authoritarian government that can create its own reality, with no accountability for mistakes or malevolence.

Ultimately, “Kompromat” is a decent popcorn thriller for a lazy summer afternoon — though, its themes skew a bit darker than most films that fit this category.

A strange mix of tone and genre, Kompromat doesn't quite reach its full potential despite an interesting premise. [Full review in Spanish]

Lack of conviction and screenplay and performance flaws in the most formal aspects of the story make Kompromat predictable, inconsequential, and unbelievable at all times. [Full review in Spanish]
