Critics Consensus

Well-acted, but it's too derivative.

Borrowing heavily from leftfield genre spin-offs like True Romance, it's no wonder this misfire was on the shelves for so long. Go to Full Review

This heist flick about young Brooklyn hoods is off the shelf after two years to capitalize on the popularity of Vin Diesel, Seth Green and Barry Pepper. It should have stayed there. Go to Full Review

Jan 25, 2019 I feel the main theme of this movie was relationships, not being a mobster. The whole movie started because Matty wanted his father's acceptance and along the way, we are presented with other relationships as well. Friendships and partnerships and the like. I feel above all, this is a movie that brings you to question, who deserves your trust? Who deserves your loyalty? Who would you sacrifice yourself for? Who MATTERS? The movie begins with Matty's focus on his father and it ends with Matty deciding that he doesn't need his father's acceptance. "Ever since I was a kid, I've been tryin' to live up to what I thought you wanted me to be. I fucked up my whole life for it. For you. You never once looked at me like I was a man. You never would have either, if I hadn't have done this." Through out the movie, we are shown that the relationships between people are what keeps the movie going. For instance, Matty did this for his father. None of it would have happened if it weren't for Matty seeking his father's approval. Taylor and Scarpa did this for Matty. They wouldn't have went to Montana to help Matty if they weren't his friends. Deputy Ward did this for Sheriff Decker. He originally didn't want any part of what Decker was doing but he caved because they were "partners". Taylor did this for Matty. He saved Matty's life by jumping in front of Matty and shielding him from the bullets because he cared for him. As the movie goes on, we begin to question, are Marbles and Scarpa going to stick around? They become weary once cops are involved and consider leaving. By the end, Scarpa plans to leave, but ends up coming back. None of them left Matty because of that friendship. Though above all relationships in this movie, the relationship most notable is the one between Matty and Taylor. Taylor shows such loyalty and devotion to Matty to the point that he would rather have died than allow Matty to die. This is the ultimate sacrifice. I have seen people saying that the ending wasn't satisying and I would have to disagree whole-heartedly. Not only did Matty realize that his father never would have accepted him for who he was, but he realizes who always had. Who deserves your trust? Who deserves your loyalty? Who would sacrifice their lives for you? Who MATTERS? At the end, Matty comes to realize, that's not his father. That's Taylor. See more
