What to Know

Critics Consensus

Technically impressive yet narratively repellent, the unremittingly grim and violent Kidnapped will prove difficult for many viewers to take.

Survival horror has rarely been approached so sparingly and yet, for all there is to admire... the initial sense of potential suspense gives way to the creeping contempt of familiarity. Go to Full Review

Starting as a coldly realistic thriller, this film eventually loses its bearings as the director Miguel ngel Vivas succumbs to a fit of nihilism, transforming "Kidnapped" into gruesome tit-for-tat torture porn. Go to Full Review

The story may not be new, but Vivas executes and escalates events with such style and technical smarts, and inserts such extreme twists and unexpected turns, you will be left gasping for breath by the gruelling end. Go to Full Review

The ethical / aesthetic balance simply does not exist in 'Kidnapped', a film for stomachs that are easy to impress -better not to mention the violent prologue- and undemanding. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Anakin R Apr 17, 2012 Why is it that when I just want an uncomplicated film that has a plot not requiring too much concentration, I end up picking a foreign film in subtitles? For that reason, me and 'Kidnapped' got off to a bad start, and the relationship didn't improve much either. It's like they couldn't be bothered with any build up or ending, as they both seemed a bit rushed. Before you know it, a family moving into their new home are suddenly broken into by the delivery men, and held hostage by three assailants. One of them takes the dad off to the bank to draw out loads of money, and the other two keep the mother and daughter 'entertained'. Not a lot really happens in-between the lines except the usual; repeated failed escape attempts, neighbours come round after hearing a noise, and there's also a lot of distress and tears shed. After an hour of this, it's like they then got bored of making this and decided to cut their losses, as the film concludes in about 5 minutes, resulting in a mass bloodbath that was out of character from the rest of the film. There's no real meaning or justification as to why the events occurred, so I guess it's just a random robbery with catastrophic results. The Spanish dialogue was a little frustrating but you could at least keep up with it and it's not like the concept was particularly taxing - half the script was just full of screaming or blubbing. Not really recommendable and I'd imagine that others are unlikely to even find this movie, let alone see it through until the end. Still, it's probably the best Spanish film I've watched recently :) See more
