This tense Japanese horror packs plenty of ghostly scares into its relatively short runtime. Go to Full Review

Ron L Dec 10, 2018 It has a decent premise and a little bit confusing plot due to the nonlinear series of events. I didn't find it the least bit scary which was a buzzkill. It may have been scary 15 years ago but it doesn't hold up well anymore. See more
Poe G May 15, 2018 A very good atmosphere with a feeling of unease and discomfort! Takashi Shimizu really knows how to scare his audience. I must say sadly that this movie is a bit boring compared to Ju On: The Curse and its sequel and the many other films after this movie. (Excluding White Ghost and Black Ghost.) But it still introduced along with Ringu to the Americans about the cliche of a woman in white. See more

Kylo R Oct 30, 2017 Absolutely phenomenal movie. What it lacks in "scare" value, it makes up for in scening, story-telling, use of plot devices, and a very Japanese style of "out-of-order" story telling that keeps you guessing what is truly going on. Watching Ringu before watching Ju-On: The Grudge helped me understand the movie better, I feel. Japanese horror movies, especially from this era, are very different than American ones. Going into it knowing that helps you follow the movie much better. I only jumped a few times, but I stayed on the edge of my seat trying to grasp and understand the horrors that were told through multiple stories / perspectives in the movie. See more
Luke R Mar 12, 2017 One of the most infamous J-horrors in cinematic history, The Grudge will have you peeking between your fingers in terror. The film plays with the narratives of each interconnected character, all linked to the house where a great evil occurred. But when stripped bare, the film actually explores psychology; the relationships between the parent and child, and patterns of behaviour, showing how these in turn are given to the next generation. Hermione W Mar 15, 2008 I have seen this stuff all before. But on the bright side, it was way better than that crappy American remake.
