Critics Consensus

The poignant humanity on display in Joyeux Noel makes its sentimentality forgivable.

[Merry Christmas] underlines all that unites us at a time when all seems to separate us. Go to Full Review

A vivid, quietly powerful recreation of a truly extraordinary moment in history: just not an overwhelmingly moving one. Go to Full Review

To my knowledge, there has never been a story that better shows how powerful the holiday in and of itself is than Joyeux Noël. Go to Full Review

Ron L Feb 5, 2019 This is one of my favorite movies ever. Historically, the Christmas Eve in 1914 in World War 1, the three armies surrounding what is known as No Man's Land created an unofficial ceasefire, and shared their Christmas Eve together in company. This movie perfectly recaptures that historical moment; while adding better moments in the movie. This movie also shows the hatred that each side showed to the other during the war and how the three armies and individual soldiers were able to overcome the common prejudice. Joyeux Noel has a great combination of different cultural ideas, history, romance, and companionship that allow it to be a great movie. I woul recommend to 12+ audiences who enjoy history. See more
Han S Jan 18, 2019 A film with heart. Portraying the power of music and spirit of Christmas to unite people, despite their loyalties to their respective countries or beliefs. Beautiful movie worth watching with boxxy software app. See more

Luke R Dec 6, 2018 Kill or be Killed but Christmas Peace A movie review of Joyeux Noël directed by Christian Carion Joyeux Noël is a historical fiction novel directed by Christian Carion. It takes place in 1914, the middle of world war 1. It takes place in the Western trenches while the fighting goes on between the French and Scottish allied together, and the Germans. With the troops worn out and ready to go home to see their families, they all decide on an unofficial, unauthorized truce, although they will get the heat for this decision later. This is a wonderfully made movie that truly captivates the tragedies and realities of the war such as language barrier, although since each country speaks their language as they would have in World War 1 it makes it difficult to watch when you must read the subtitles the whole time, and you must have background knowledge to understand the setting of each scene. Since this is a movie throughout World War 1 and many countries were involved, they did not all speak the same language. The troops shown are French, Scottish, and German, each character speaks in their Native language. Therefor if you do not speak English, French, and German you will have to be reading subtitles for a large portion of the movie. This causes you to only focus on the words you are reading rather then the movie scenes themselves. Also if you do not have much background on different alliances and geography in World War 1, this movie would be extremely hard to follow. The countries often switch therefore if you do not recognize the language or anything about it, you cannot figure out the setting of that moment. On the other hand having the different languages makes this historically correct of what it was truly like fighting with these different people. It also shows the emotions of the people accurately at different points of the war, such as excited in the beginning and then by the time Christmas was coming, tired and over everything. Also it showed more individual tragedies which gave a stronger emotional connection to the movie. This is an incredible movie choice for those who love historical fiction, and want a good factual war movie. It incorporates great education in an entertaining way, although you must have background knowledge before watching, and the subtitles can be frustrating. Besides those minor annoyances it is a fantastic movie that I would still recommend to be watched by anyone 14+ interested in history. 3.5/5 stars See more
Han W Apr 1, 2018 A heartwarming tale of brotherhood among "enemies." A truce is called on the front lines during WWI as the armies of France, Britain and Germany come together to discover that we, humans, are more alike across the globe than different. Same worries, same hopes. etc. Based on a true story, this was a powerfully effective story handled well by both the actors and those behind the cameras. My favorite movie on the subject, however, remains A Midnight Clear. See more
Han R Dec 30, 2017 A modern christmas classic especially if you are interested in WW1 (which happens to be my favorite war to learn about).
