What to Know

Critics Consensus

Joy is anchored by a strong performance from Jennifer Lawrence, although director David O. Russell's uncertain approach to its fascinating fact-based tale only sporadically sparks bursts of the titular emotion.

Joy pursues a number of ill-fitting narrative detours that detract from the fascinating story that should be at the core of the movie. While I was rooting for the film-and for Joy herself - ultimately it felt like the film missed a key opportunity. Go to Full Review

This optimistic, often amusing story is a Lawrence show all the way as she flies the flag for feminism, entrepreneurship and family without missing a beat. Go to Full Review

'Joy' provides another phenomenal starring vehicle for the uncommonly talented Jennifer Lawrence but, in all other regards, is a cluttered, confused mess. Go to Full Review

[David] Russell manages to put his stamp on what might otherwise be a conventional biopic and [Jennifer] Lawrence makes Joy another of Russell’s great fighters, rolling with every punch and getting back up for the next round. Go to Full Review

What makes ‘Joy’ peak Christmas viewing is that its plucky, practical heroine succeeds while carrying her bumbling family … Joy’s best revenge is to blanket them in a snowfall of generosity they know they don’t deserve. Go to Full Review

See more
Jan 3, 2019 This movie has no Joy at all
Theodore W Jan 2, 2019 A very good movie. The only thing I really disliked was the fact that the movie was a little inaccurate and not true (they left out or glossed over the fact that she attended Pace University and made her seem like someone who never achieved anything prior to the mop, besides the dog collar). Otherwise, this is a great movie. Sad at times, happy at others, but always in a good way. I love true stories, especially about smart, great, and resilient people. See more
Rey P Dec 12, 2018 Success despite everything !
Harry M Dec 7, 2018 I think the movie was trying to be an epic feminist tale of a self made female millionaire, but it came off as "meh" ... what I got from it is "yeah that's nice for her that she found success with her invention, and I feel bad for her that some of her family members are truly despicable people." As for the acting, I was impressed with Deniro's performance. I think they should have gone with an older actress for Jennifer Lawrence's role, I kept forgetting that the girl was supposed to be her daughter because Jennifer didn't look old enough to have a daughter that age. Also Jennifer's acting... was she supposed to come off as severely depressed/shell shocked/ not responding to any outside stimuli throughout the movie? I don't know, but that's how she came across. Very boring. See more
Ron S Nov 30, 2018 Strengths: The combination of David O. Russell, Jennifer Lawrence (Joy Mangano), and Bradley Cooper (Neil Walker) is usually a recipe for success. The two films theyâ(TM)ve collaborated on in the past all worked. Again, it mostly connected. Lawrence performs at her best with Russell and sheâ(TM)s the highlight here. She takes the lead role and runs with it, earning the hell out of that Best Actress nomination. She steals every scene sheâ(TM)s in. Edgar Ramirez (Tony Miranne) is strong, as are Robert De Niro (Rudy Mangano) and Dascha Polanco (Jackie). The film delivers on the inspiring front, delivering more than a few moments where youâ(TM)ll be motivated to get up and do something like Joy. I also found the relationship between Joy and her grandmother, a very good Diane Ladd (Mimi) to be well handled. When she eventually passes away, itâ(TM)s a sad moment. Weaknesses: While all the acting is solid, I do feel that Cooper was underutilized. Like Lawrence, he excels with Russell but he wasnâ(TM)t given a lot to do here. He only had three or four scenes that meant anything and didnâ(TM)t get a chance to shine. As the movie goes on, it loses steam. I donâ(TM)t know if it was diminishing returns on Joyâ(TM)s struggles or what, but something doesnâ(TM)t fully click and I ended up losing interest late. I was more interested in when it would end than how we would get there. Overall: The narrative ultimately isnâ(TM)t great, but the performances by a strong cast more than make up for it. They turn this into a good movie. See more
