Critics Consensus

Journey's End brings R.C. Sherriff's 90-year-old play to the screen with thrilling power, thanks to director Saul Dibb's hard-hitting urgency and brilliant work from a talented cast.

Director Saul Dibb doesn't quite succeed in making the drama feel fresh, but this is a sensitive and handsomely performed adaptation. Go to Full Review

If it's not pacifist, it's certainly a profoundly anti-war statement about men under ultimate stress. One hundred years on, it's never too soon, never too late for that idea. Go to Full Review

Journey's End is a powerful and moving tribute to the men who fought in the trenches. Go to Full Review

The most fitting and laudable word to compliment the "Journey’s End" ensemble is maturity. Each of the principal players exudes some growth of that trait both on and off camera. Go to Full Review

You don't have to be a student of history to know that the trenches during World War I were horrific places to fight. Journey's End does not attempt to glorify that field of battle, but it also never quite fully commits to the true horror either... Go to Full Review

Leia S Dec 26, 2018 A bleak and straight ahead telling of horrific events in the final year of WW1. Focussing on trench life and a few characters is the film's strength. However after seeing Peter Jackson's documentary, you wonder if the trench life is portrayed grimly enough (as bad as it seems in this film). See more
Abraham M Dec 9, 2018 I have seen a few great war films in my time - saving private ryan, hacksaw ridge, platoon, full metal jacket and the like - this is different to them all - a realistic a life in the trenches, strong acting, psychological trauma and the impending doom of being sent over the top to their slaughter for a few yards of land. whilst it is difficult to describe such a film as entertaining it brings the horrors of world war i into stark reality. well worth a watch. Anakin R Dec 8, 2018 From the vantage point of a century on, we think of WWI as the pointless, mass slaughter of men led by inept officers. Of course, it was much more nuanced than that and this film shows that superbly. With the exveprion of a brief foray into No Man's Land and a scene from home, the action takes place in the claustrophobia of a small section of front line trench and dugout. The sense of impending doom and despair are, at times almost hard to bear and this is a testament to both the story and the acting. Ultimately, it's less about war and more about human nature. Less about the big picture and more about the immediate environment. It's about being trapped in a small shithole in the ground and wondering what is coming next. By the end, I was as relieved as anyone when the balloon went up. See more
Dec 6, 2018 By far one of the best war movies I've ever seen, brilliantly acted and incredibly real it doesn't fall into the same traps other war movies fall into by showing massive amounts of fighting for the sake of the spectacle, it focuses on the humanity of the characters and it really makes you feel their plight. Some of the scenes are so tense I actually felt physically ill watching. Fantastic movie. See more
Luke W Dec 4, 2018 It is an hour and 47 minutes too long ? The brothers in arms homage of the retreating company passing the incoming company was about as good as it got. Didn't do the horror justice enough. Pretty lame acting by the actor playing Stanhope. Don't waste your time, there is more depth on any war memorial. See more
Ron M Dec 1, 2018 Powerful and insightful as to what I can only imagine was a horrendous reality on the front line. There is nothing particularly patriotic here, no message of right or wrong to the origin of the war... it is purely about the reality of being on the front line and the toll it takes on the officers (and in part some of men/soldiers). It tackles PTSD (or shell shock as it was then) and the questionable orders that are passed down from the chain of command. Do not expect a happy ending or some Hollywood moral tale... just grit, dirt, blood and tears. Went into this film blind with no real expectation, and it's rocketed it's way into what I feel is one of the best takes on war I've seen. Can see it becoming a classic. See more
