What to Know

Critics Consensus

As narratively misguided as it is woefully miscast, Johnny Mnemonic brings the '90s cyberpunk thriller to inane new whoas -- er, lows.

It poignantly juxtaposes its futurism with a yearning for the past, in the form of Johnny's abandoned memories. As for Reeves, he is always best when he is calm and frowningly subdued... Go to Full Review

Johnny Mnemonic is no The Matrix; its world-building lacks specifically nuanced grit. But the ideas Gibson thrust forward furthered the cyberpunk conversation onscreen for years to come. Go to Full Review

Johnny Mnemonic is one of the great goofy gestures of recent cinema, a movie that doesn't deserve one nanosecond of serious analysis but has a kind of idiotic grandeur that makes you almost forgive it. Go to Full Review

As with many other apocalyptic movies, and Blade Runner comes to mind, grim is the best way to describe the plot, art direction, and mood of Johnny Mnemonic. Go to Full Review

Finn S Jan 8, 2019 Johnny Mnemonic is a failure of epic proportions. First and foremost Keanu Reeves is not the right choice for this film. He is bland and although in the right role(such as in The Matrix) he can be good, here he is totally miscast. Johnny Mnemonic is trying to be a Blade Runner for the '90s, using cyber-space as its playground. The main problem is the script, which is as dumb as action stories get. Just because a film takes place in a futuristic setting doesn't mean that all logic and coherence have to go out the window. Above all, why should we care whether Johnny's head explodes when Reeves' performance fails to spark any empathy for his character? Johnny Mnemonic is brash, flashy, and loud, but it lacks a few key ingredients -- namely heart, soul, and intelligence. Rent Blade Runner instead. 3/10 (Badly cast, bad screenplay and just a bad film). See more
Hagrid S Nov 10, 2018 Who will tough this 97 movie will predict exactly what we living today with wifi & Microwave signals in the air and the mental disorders, great plot, funny in many ways, its a gold piece, ahead of its time, bearly understanded, remake will be great! See more
George M Apr 3, 2018 The 90's at its best/worst! Its a great cult classic.
Abraham R Feb 3, 2018 Great movie, classic 90's action goodness.
Hermione R Feb 1, 2018 For a movie about futuristic technology, tech at the time simply wasn't up to the task of representing William Gibson's imagination. Ripe for re-imagination now, tho. See more
Poe S Jan 4, 2018 Three stars for a critic-destroyed piece of garbage? Yes, because this cyberpunk movie has a lot to give. I think that this is the experiment before Matrix's worldwide success. Even the main actor is the same: Keanu Reeves, in one of his not-very-well actings. I mean that the acting is not very convincing and maybe it could have been represented much better. After that, it is important to say that in this motion picture there are too many special effects: in some scenes they're so many that I almost had a headache. One of this movie's original and well-thought aspects is the plot, a typical cyberpunk one: in 2021 world, Johnny is an informatic delivery man, he stores lots of data and information in his brain with special items; he has to deliver 320 GB of data from Pekin to Newark, while his brain's maximum capacity is less than 200 GB. Anyway, he does accept this job because he needs money. But, because of a coding error, he knows what type of information he's transporting: these are the cure for a mortal disease, called "nerve attenuation syndrome", caused by technology overusing. This cure has been discovered by Pharmakom, a multinational company, who hasn't revealed it yet: they want to propose the patients a life cure, so patients will pay for the rest of their lives. While Johnny is in Newark, the Yakuza (the society who has stolen the data) is pursuing him. He eventually meets Jane, a girl with NAS. She knows how to help Johnny so she brings him to Spider, an ex-doctor, who helps Johnny by sending him to the headquarters of the Resistance. There a dolphin, called Johnson, controls every single camera the Resistance has stolen and cracked. While they are emptying Johnny's brain, the Yakuza breaks into the building so after a tough struggle Johnny manages to empty his memory and cure Jane with the data he was carrying. So the plot isn't silly or nonsense, it's actually a good one. So all in all, the only thing that this dark star needs to bright, is a more convincing acting. Despite that (and, perhaps, the headache-inducing special effects) "Johnny Mnemonic" is a good movie, who has been the first to show a future cyber world, maybe without the same fortune as Matrix.
