Johnny Kelly (Michael Keaton) lives a double life: at home, he's the good apple, looking after his ailing mother (Maureen Stapleton) and sexually obsessed brother, Tommy (Griffin Dunne). But his not-so-secret life is as Johnny Dangerously, an up-and-coming criminal being groomed by local gangster Jocko Dundee (Peter Boyle). The great shame is that this mess belongs to director Amy Heckerling, whose gentle touch made "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" so much more than a teen sex comedy. Go to Full Review

The opening scenes of Johnny Dangerously are so funny you just don't see how they can keep it up. And you're right: They can't. But they make a real try. Go to Full Review

Luke R Sep 16, 2018 Mel Brooks style parody film of classic gangster films. Michael Keaton plays Johnny Kelly/Johnny Dangerously, who works his way up the underworld ladder, while his hard working younger brother Tommy Kelly, Griffin Dunne, plays a crusading District Attorney (ALA "Manhattan Melodrama"). Johnny also has plenty of gangster rivals in the form of Joe Piscopo as Danny Vermin ("My mother grabbed me once... ONCE!") and Roman Moroni ("Fargin Iceholes"). The film script isn't especially funny, but Keaton is very likable as a James Cagey-like fast talking gangster, as are the rest of the talented comedic cast (Maureen Stapleton, Peter Boyle, Danny DeVito, Ray Walston, Dick Butkus, Alan Hale Jr., Jack Nance, Carl Gottlieb, James Coco, Joe Flaherty, Taylor Negron, Vincent Schiavelli, and Dom DeLuise as The Pope). The film was directed by Amy Heckerling ("Clueless," "Look Who's Talking," "Fast Times at Ridgemont Hight"), so there's some talent behind the camera as well, but overall I couldn't help but feel that this film should have been a lot funnier. Still, it's worth watching for the cast if for nothing else. See more

Abraham M Jul 7, 2017 It's like the Mel Brooks movie that never happened.
