Critics Consensus

John Wick: Chapter 2 does what a sequel should -- which in this case means doubling down on the non-stop, thrillingly choreographed action that made its predecessor so much fun.

An antidote to overly elaborate action films, John Wick: Chapter 2 doubles down on both the mythology and the violence of the first film, delivering a great followup that doesn't lose sight of what makes it so damn entertaining.

John Wick: Chapter 2 doesn't radically subvert the genre, but it doesn't intend to. What it does is something so much better: it loves it and celebrates it with charm, skill and devotion.

But the qualities that made the first film a hit – neo-noir style, viscerally balletic action and Ian McShane at his most menacingly debonair – are still more than enough to see Chapter 2 through to the close and make a third entry an enticing prospect.

Despite offering wonderfully staged action that takes stunts to a new level, it lacks the emotional heart of the debut film.

I liked John Wick: Chapter 2, but I can't say it was as good as the first one. As you learn more about John Wick's world and the fantasy behind it, the plot holes just stumped me for a little while. At the end of the movie, Everyone in New York seems to be looking at John Wick- yet I thought he was working for a secret low-scale organization. Was it implying that the whole city was after him or he was just imagining things? Also in the third act, John is pursued by people from the organization, but these people keep appearing with small groups of citizens. Mistake or intentional inclusion? But all plot holes aside, there's still amazing action choreography, and a good script. Worth it if you want to see the full John Wick trilogy, but it's about the same action as the first one.
