Critics Consensus

Well-acted and fiendishly frightening with an emotionally affecting story at its core, It amplifies the horror in Stephen King's classic story without losing touch with its heart.

The serious dramatic themes ring hollow, however, leaving only the paperback boogety boogety to justify the Oscar-bait running time. Go to Full Review

The film depends - and succeeds - entirely on the strength of their performances, and for two hours that speed by all too quickly, it's not too much of a stretch to feel like we're on summer vacation with them. Go to Full Review

It’s exciting to remember the reintroduction to Pennywise was not just brilliant, but an important piece of horror’s revival. Go to Full Review

IT 2017 is one of the best mainstream, general audience horror movies to come out in the last decade. Director Andy Muschietti keeps most of the dread from the source material and includes some modern production and jump scares... Go to Full Review

Muschietti’s film teaches the audience that it is only when you are alone that IT sees you as vulnerable, but together–with friends that care so deeply for you and you for them–any disaster that comes your way can and will be conquered. Go to Full Review

Anakin R Apr 28, 2019 This adaptation of Stephen King's horrifying novel strikes all the right beats. It's terrifying with an amazing performance from Bill Scarsgard as Pennywise the Clown. I believe the best part of this film is the child actors who are funny, love-able, and are able to carry the film by themselves. See more
Ron G Apr 27, 2019 Tried too hard to make it scary, which they succeeded but it results in a scattered plot and missing holes. Feels like this is more on Stephen King than Muschietti. (55%) See more
Luke S Apr 27, 2019 This movie has everything: jump scares, humor, heart, action, and a great cast. I'm not one for horror movies but this one is very good. The film was long but I was never bored through the two and a half hours. The horror elements were impressive that I was unsettled by some of the clown scenes. There were some questions that weren't answered that would've explained some significant events, it made you think though. I'm not going to say much besides that I honestly can't wait for Chapter Two. See more
Ron S Apr 25, 2019 Absorbing, brilliantly acted, and perfectly paced, "It" offers a well-crafted fantasy film; that rather unintentionally strips away from horror. See more
Apr 22, 2019 Very good horror movie, scared even me in bits! Not seen the TV Movie version so can't compare but I enjoyed this and looking forward to Chapter Two. See more
Apr 22, 2019 "It" isn't scary. "It" isn't unnerving like "The Conjuring". But what makes "It" a wonderful movie to watch is the performances by the child actors and a beautifully nostalgic setting that all benefits from a mellifluous score by Benjamin Wallfisch. Because the movie is about childhood and "coming of age", "It's" less-than scary horror cliches are forgiven, and you leave the theatre having enjoyed the film for a whole other reason. See more
