When Col. Ted Masters' (Tim Thomerson) plane goes down in an Arab country, and he's sentenced to death for trespassing, his 18-year-old son, Doug (Jason Gedrick), is determined to save him. Unfortunately, Doug isn't the best fighter pilot -- he wasn't accepted into the Air Force because he needs to listen to music in order to hit a target. So he enlists the help of Col. Chappy (Louis Gossett Jr.) to borrow a couple of F-16 planes, fly across the Atlantic and start a rescue mission.

... there's no apparent logic to any of this, except as a way to capitalize on the current vogue for imperialist fervor and steal the thunder from Paramount's "Top Gun,"... Go to Full Review

"Iron Eagle’s" greatest resemblance to "Top Gun" is that it is also deeply silly. Had it dispensed with dull drama and repetitively disappointing action beats, it may not have been so culturally grounded by comparison 40 years later. Go to Full Review

George P Apr 14, 2019 I hat this movie a lot, dont plan on seeing this waste of time anytime soon
Rey R Jan 22, 2019 Here we have an action film which is filled with the kind of macho nonsense and blind patriotism that might have gotten the audience's adrenaline flowing in the Eighties but seems laughable and outdated in today's world. Don't get me wrong - patriotism with a purpose can be a beautiful thing. However, patriotism without a purpose can be dangerously unhinged. Let's face it, folks . . . toying around with the possibility of creating an international incident over one fallen fighter pilot? Teenagers subverting military bureaucracy (aided by a colonel in the reserves) simply because they don't agree with the concept? Should this really be a topic used for a film that attempts to create light-hearted entertainment out of war and destruction? Personally I don't think so . . . and I didn't think so even when I was an admittedly rambunctious teenager myself. For what it's worth, the plot about the teenaged son of captured Colonel Ted Masters (a second colonel in the same film? - okay) hooking up with a crafty Air Force veteran to invade a sovereign Arab state could have at least provided some marginally fantastic fight sequences here and there. Sadly, it doesn't, leaving us with a film that feels like a poor man's "Top Gun" with a star - Jason Gedrick - who feels like a poor man's Tom Cruise. Ironic since the legendary Cruise vehicle wouldn't be released until four months after "Iron Eagle." It's not just the unrealistically blind patriotism or the lack of action that sinks the film. It also puts the emphasis on the wrong cast members. There is a great unsung supporting cast which doesn't rack up nearly enough mileage from their performances including Larry B. Scott (Lamar from "Revenge of the Nerds"), Jerry Levine (Styles from "Teen Wolf"), and Tom Fridley (Cort from the sixth entrant in the "Friday the 13th" franchise). Conversely, too much screen time is given over to lifeless, generic actors like David Suchet and Michael Alldredge who portray enemy Colonel Akir Nakesh and friendly Colonel Blackburn respectively. Man, EVERYONE'S a freaking colonel in this film! The only actor who fits well and is given an appropriate amount of screen time equal to his abilities is the always reliable Louis Gossett, Jr. Sidney J. Furie has directed some enthralling films in his career - "The Ipcress File" and "Lady Sings the Blues" spring to mind immediately - however, "Iron Eagle" is not one of them. Outside of its issues with the cast, this film has horrible pacing problems. I felt like I was watching a three-and-a-half hour epic monstrosity and was genuinely surprised when I found less than two hours had passed since the start of the film. Its double cop out ending is absolutely nauseating and its lack of serious action feels almost surreal given the genre in which the film was placed. On the plus side, the soundtrack kicks the hell out of the one featured in "Top Gun" making the most of the music it uses from Queen, Twisted Sister, and Adrenalin. When all is said and done, I wouldn't watch this film again and I'd suggest many who are looking for a good time take a pass on this as well. See more
Rey R Jan 1, 2019 A remake with actual aircraft activity may suffice. However, Louis Gossett Jr and David Suchet performances could benefit from ones attention. See more
Aug 8, 2018 I know the movie is a bit cheesy in this very tipical 80's style. However childhood sentiment aside, having watched it a couple of times lately (i like to come back to it from time to time), I would say this movie is entertaining, funny, relatively insightful (most flight/military facts generally check out) and uplifting (one of the things I miss most about the 80's is the general enthusiasm). I like th Lous Gossett Jr. role as Chappy. Despite the bulk of details the movie got right, the storyline of 2 private citizens taking on a middle eastern country by themselves is completely unrealistic, but so is James Bond and bulk of action cinema entertainment, so who cares. It's fun! And the music is great. Personally this movie also inspired my love for aviation. If you dream of becoming a pilot, you might really enjoy it. See more
Jun 19, 2018 One of the dumbest movies ever...1. He outruns a plane with his motorcycle, 2. He blows up an entire country by himself, 3. The foreign commander tells his army to "attacl them through the flames" when they could have just drove around the flames and not blown up. Those are just three of many...plus, the steal two fighter jets and don't get into any trouble See more
Finn S May 21, 2018 1 disgruntled Teenager, an Air force Mentor, a POW Father, an entire Middle East ( Unnamed Country ) Combatant, and one fully laden armed F-16. Sounds like a bad arcade game story? The only missing is getting the girl in the end. See more
