In the Los Angeles Police Department, Officer Dennis Peck (Richard Gere) is a divisive figure, loved by those who are loyal to him and looked on with suspicion by others. His disreputable behavior and dubious finances arouse the suspicion of Internal Affairs, and Sgt. Raymond Avila (Andy Garcia) and his partner (Laurie Metcalf) are assigned to investigate. When a series of witnesses are murdered, Avila realizes his life is in danger, along with that of his wife (Nancy Travis).

Two hours of sweaty, macho headbutting ensues. Gere’s charming, ruthless sociopath — his glassy eyes and false smile work a treat here — steals the show.

Gere is hypnotic, writer Henry Bean's construction is entertainingly intricate, and director Mike Figgis knows how to turn on a subtle, authentic erotic heat.

Figgis never lets the pace slow long enough to expose the story's thinness despite, in retrospect, a moderate amount of action.

Mike Figgis seems the least likely to succeed at a straight-ahead cop thriller. As the plot pushes past logical boundaries of even the most lumbering bureaucracy, it’s not surprising that "Internal Affairs" becomes an almost full-blown deconstruction.

Internal Affairs has nothing to do with life or police corruption or infidelity as we experience them in the real world. It's actually a position paper on how to titillate the audience... without having a trace of honest regard for the themes it raises.

It blends the lines perfectly where no one is safe and danger lurks at every corner.

A good movie. Gere is good at playing a sub-human vermin creature.

If you said some movie is perfect, this one deserves to be above them.

Easily one of the best Gere flicks, also of García's.

The film goes completely off the rails in the third act, which is a shame considering it actually offered really interestingly drawn and multi-layered characters. Also, one of Gere's most compelling performances.
