Florida resident Diana (Melissa McCarthy) has a luxurious lifestyle as the queen of retail, buying whatever strikes her fancy -- and it's all free, thanks to Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman), a guy from Denver whose identity she stole. With just one week to track down Diana before his world implodes, the real Sandy heads south to confront the unapologetic con artist and bring her back to Denver so that he can clear his name and restore his shattered credit rating.

Critics Consensus

Identity Thief's few laughs are attributable to Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, who labor mightily to create a framework for the movie's undisciplined plotline.

There's something to offend everyone in Identity Thief: racist jokes, gay jokes, the word "vagina" wielded as an insult.

Feeble as comedy, the movie is needlessly violent, too, as if half the crew misguidedly thought they were making a foul-mouthed action thriller.

If the plot is going to be light-hearted and fun-loving, there's simply no room for extremely dark characters and situations.

Despite it's formulas and occasionally stale moments, I found myself surrendered to the entire journey and enjoying myself immensely.

This would-be comedy veers back and forth between mean and nasty and overly sentimental, resulting in a film that quickly grows tiresome.

Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy play two different characters but I enjoyed their adventure. Melissa McCarthy's character is not a good person but you end up feeling bad for her when you hear her story. You also hope that Jason Bateman gets his identity back and does not lose his job because he has 2 kids and a third kid on the way. The talented Amanda Peet plays Jason Bateman's wife but I wish she would have gotten more screen time.

Identity Thief falls short, even with Bateman and McCarthy, which makes you ask questions of the scipt. Some good lines earn laughs, but too regularly they're cheap and easy. Seems like this comedy needs more of an identity.

The characters are the same exact people they started as at the beginning of the movie, making the whole thing feel like a waste of time. Not even strong actors like Bateman and McCarthy could save this trainwreck of a script, but at least they made it easier.

Identity Thief gives little assistance to an audience who wants to laugh at McCarthy and Bateman's decent performances but a scattered plot means everyone goes home on a low.
