Critics Consensus

Icarus is eye-opening viewing for professional sports enthusiasts, yet it should also prove thoroughly gripping even for filmgoers who might not necessarily be drawn to the subject.

It's fair, then, to call Icarus a coup for a first-time documentarian, the product of both dumb luck and a strange rapport between Fogel and Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov. Go to Full Review

Fogel's willingness to follow a yarn that starts in one location before veering into entirely different narrative territory yields fascinating and entertaining results. Go to Full Review

Hermione R Feb 22, 2019 What begins as an fairly interesting documentary about doping in sport, quickly becomes a tale of human struggle amidst one of the biggest scandals ever to hit the world of sport. The character and the storytelling are compelling, as are the potential consequences that our protagonists face. A must see See more
Feb 17, 2019 Happenstance. Fogel set out to do a documentary on doping stumbles on a story of international corruption in the world of sports. The story pretty much takes off and tells the story all by itself. Also of interest is the fact that I'm seeing few reviews about this documentary written by people who with doubts about credibility of a pretty compelling witness. I'm starting to think that Russian government is trying to give this movie a bad rating to discourage people from watching its mea culpa. Stay away Russian Trolls!!! See more
Theodore G Feb 14, 2019 I am awestruck! My ultimate takeaway is that the IOC is just as corrupt as Russia. With full knowledge of tampering with samples and switching out urine, the IOC still allowed Russia to participate at the 2016 games. I can no longer look at the Olympics with the belief that it is pure and a time where our world can put aside their differences to come together in true sportsmanship. It has been bought. Maybe Putin was so disgusted with this incident he did took measures to tamper with our government? I think itâ(TM)s far fetched but you never know..... See more
Hagrid M Feb 7, 2019 Solid documentary that helped uncover one of the great drug cheat stories, maybe the greatest in terms of the depth of cheating. Standard doc, not sure I warmed to anyone in it at all. Vaguely interesting but really just more evidence of the Orwellian nature of Putin's Russia. See more
Anakin L Oct 18, 2018 Finally got around to seeing this. It's a bit disjointed at times, but the fact that the director ended up essentially harboring one of the puppet-masters of the Russian doping regime makes it pretty wild and suspenseful. See more
Kylo P Oct 6, 2018 Bryan Fogel brings us a fascinating look at the corruption of sports doping and finds his story transform from a personal experiment to a tense geopolitical thriller. See more
