Critics Consensus

Perfectly cast and packed with suspense, The Hunt for Red October is an old-fashioned submarine thriller with plenty of firepower to spare.

Clancy is known for writing difficult books, but the movie makes plausible a preposterous situation because of Baldwin's convincing, low-key approach to being a film hero. Go to Full Review

You may not be limp from accumulated tension when this hunt is over, but its cautiously upbeat global message leaves a satisfying glow and it operates with a crackerjack premise. Go to Full Review

It's a tad obsolete, but that does not impede it from being tremendously dynamic and entertaining. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

As an espionage thriller, I must say, it has a tension that runs against the clock like a torpedo under the sea as it outlines its plot of diplomacy and naval strategy in the twilight of the Cold War. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Rey S Mar 14, 2019 A dull submarine affair. The Hunt for Red October (1990) is a very slow film with a confusing plot delivered to its audience with muddled editing. Despite a stellar all star cast and solid direction, The Hunt for Red October meanders its way to its anti-climactic finale. The special effects look like toy submarines in a bath tub, while the torpedo explosions look like they were done on Mario Paint. The music is dull and as bland as the cinematography. I do not really like the muted color scheme either. Sean Connery is a great actor, but fails to do a Russian accent, opting to slip back into his comfort zone with his natural Scottish growl. His performance is intriguing enough. Sam Neill is the best part of The Hunt for Red October. He tries the hardest with his accent and gives a touching dramatic performance. Alec Baldwin is good, but boring. I guess I could say that about everyone else in this film. It's nice to see Scott Glenn and Tim Curry or Stellan Skarsgard. But all the actors were underutilized. I just only found Sam Neill to feel compelling. The script from Tom Clancy's novel should be riveting, but the premise and twists are the only interesting parts. The execution of this film should be a gripping spy war game, but it feels like everyone running through the motions. I nearly feel asleep watching The Hunt for Red October and that's all I can say about it. See more

Abraham M Feb 19, 2019 You can't go wrong wigh a Sean Connery movie. This was just as good to watch today as it was when it came out.
Feb 1, 2019 The best thrilling movie ever made!
Abraham W Jan 28, 2019 Now that os how you make a movie! I didn't appreciate it as a teenager, thinking the good parts were in the last 20min. Now as an adult who understands the terror and anxiety of a moment, or the drama within a single sentence, this became a must see as far as I'm concerned. Unlike Crimson Tide (which i still think is a good movie) this one doesn't need to resort to fist fights, mutiny and deaths to create tension. This movie isn't about right and wrong, who is better, or how great a hero is. This movie is all about perception, the fear of the unknown, and the terror of the Cold War. This is a masterclass in film making, far exceeding other Jack Ryan movies See more
Ron P Jan 20, 2019 Fantastic film, one of the best of all time.
