Critics Consensus

Nostalgic without becoming maudlin, this working-class drama is enlivened by a terrific cast and John Ford's ineffable directorial eye.

John Ford's much-honored movie about the decline of a Welsh mining family is moving and impressive in a big-Hollywood-picture way. Go to Full Review

The drama is no "made up" tale, but a panoramic glimpse of the small joys, the unmeasurable needs, the many griefs of a whole countryside. It is a story of life that is no more, but it is also a drama of people in every community. Go to Full Review

This is best known among cineasts as the movie that beat Citizen Kane (and The Maltese Falcon) for the Best Picture Oscar, but that really shouldn’t be held against it (just against the petty and myopic Academy). Go to Full Review

Unfairly derided as one of the most undeserving Best Picture winners, John Ford's gorgeous, heartbreaking portrait of a Welsh coal-mining community represents the best sort of cinema. Go to Full Review

Abraham P Nov 29, 2018 Ford's family drama is a force majeure that resists and binds their relationship with aces. How Green Was My Valley Ford's family drama is a force majeure that resists and binds their relationship with aces. And these aces aren't just drawn from the uncertainty and discreteness of the script. This wallop of drama is justified to the core. It lops off any whatsoever commercial aspect of cinema and still remains crispy on the surface and husky to the core. Brimmed with three dimensional characters whose perspective aren't just kept on the table but factors majorly on the trajectory of the storyline, the tracks never overlaps with each others with buoyant gripping screenplay that keeps giving back. Llewellyn's novel is adapted by Dunne who has kept the heart and the spark of the family alive in his narration. This is not your usual family drama that mourns the mistakes or bends the rules or plead for amendment, it is gut wrenching honest relationship between the subsequent generations holding on to their ideologies. And with an inevitable antagonist such as the coal mine which is essentially a part of evolution of the village. Hence, binding such major change on the lifestyle and the mob mentality, it squeezes out the best of drama once and for all. The performance of the cast speaks within first few minutes of the feature. The dinner table conversations, bickerings and drifting apart for the ego, the exhilaration and the chills does communicate through it. Crisp and Allgood as the root and the head of the family aptly fabricates the genre into a much more grounded persona. The younger cast too has hold onto their performance decently and are convincing for the most part of it. How Green Was My Valley is not only one of the best titled tale but also soars above all in its genre for its nature to keep rejuvenating the old thoughts. See more
Harry S Jan 15, 2018 A great moving tale about the Welsh miners. Another lost flixster rating. 1001 movies to see before you die.
Harry S Jan 7, 2018 Admittingly Welles did better than his predecessor, Ford still did great with his best work yet. The design is spectacular, the cinematography has a lasting impact and the characters all have a deep and everlasting impact. See more
Leia S Nov 8, 2017 This is a beautiful movie and more reflective of the times than most here realize. First, to our younger reviewers. The use of black and white is not to create an ambience. Color film wasn’t in existence at the time, ah, close to 80 years ago. One must really have appreciation for films of the era. America wasn’t the same. We don’t have the same values or culture. Just think, we were listening to big band and compare that to the filth we listen to now! Better than Citizen Kane? Maybe then. But, how often do we agree with Oscar choices today??? See more
Finn S Jul 9, 2017 This film sweeping the Oscars in 1942 eludes explanation. It's fine as an old movie but seems mostly to be a parade of vignettes around one place and family (and some Welsh singers) more than a cohesive story thread that stitches elements to a satisfying The End. Likely it was the times, just after Pearl Harbor, that helped this very simple production (except for the set in Malibu) resonate & win audiences. Ford's collaboration with Zanuck here is said to have produced Ford's favorite production. It's good but just doesn't quite seem to rise to great. A couple of special notes: The film's clarion yet mild commentary on (a) the harsh nature of capitalism v its toll on human capital (people) & family life and (b) the gossipy hypocrisy of church'ianity and its weight upon good men serving as pastors seeking to follow the spirit of the Scriptures is shown more clearly than one might expect for the times - and with Zanuck being an anti-union Republican. That IS remarkable about this picture - for then and for now in a forsaken era of Trumplicanism. Again, it might've been the times since The Depression was a decade on when "How Green ..." was released. The cinematography won an Oscar. It's good enough, but notice the many up'tilted (low-angle) shots throughout the film. Interesting. See more
