Best friends Josh (Derek Richardson) and Paxton (Jay Hernandez) decide to spend the summer after college graduation on an all-out backpacking trip across Europe. While stopping in Amsterdam to indulge their tastes for drugs and sex, they meet Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson), a like-minded traveler from Iceland. When the three bachelors set off to investigate enticing rumors of a Slovakian hostel in a city populated by lusty women, they find themselves drawn unwittingly into a deadly game.

Critics Consensus

Featuring lots of guts and gore, Hostel is a wildly entertaining corpse-filled journey -- assuming one is entertained by corpses, guts, and gore, that is.

Whether or not this kind of horror movie is your cup of tea, you have to at least admire Roth for the daring and creativity with which he illustrates that concept.

The first act's filler, otherwise it's a squirmer. Bring a bucket.

It’s definitely exploitative. From the generous heaping of bare tits, to the sinkfuls of mangled limbs, it’s not purporting to be high art. However... it does take extra care into providing a framework for these exploitative elements to exist believably.

Inelegant, schlocky, and full-on? Sure. But it’s also a relentless B-movie hitting your nerves with a blood-soaked meat pounder.

This movie is rough all around. The gore was well done and was something different we hadn't seen before in a horror film.

Though rather low budget-appearing and with a typical torture theme, this movie explores the dark possibilities of tourist kidnapping. Taking the urge to kill and providing a place for people to carry out such instinct, Hostel allows no escape for the victims. For how can one reason with sadistic pleasure offered up so easily?

There is enough ugliness in the world, to not have to create ideas of more.

Hostel [Eli Roth, 2006, United States] Nothing here is pleasing. Not its concept, not its execution, and not even its gore. Down to the trash bin. 3/10

Hostel is a film that goes from pot-smoking sexualized content, right to a gore fest that dares you to look away, as well as a triumphant survivor.

Beginning was slower and felt like a stupid porno of dumb young Americans. After about 2/3 into the movie the truth came out and slapped the viewer in the face, it got good( suspenseful and pretty grim.)Disturbing story that feels actually believable . Ending was amazing and unexpected. Half star given for the ending. Lesson. Be careful if your a tourist. Reckless gallavanting comes with a cost. Nothing teaches that better than Hostel.
