Following his great success with "North by Northwest," director Alfred Hitchcock makes a daring choice for his next project: an adaptation of Robert Bloch's novel "Psycho." When the studio refuses to back the picture, Hitchcock decides to pay for it himself in exchange for a percentage of the profits. His wife, Alma Reville, has serious reservations about the film but supports him nonetheless. Still, the production strains the couple's marriage.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it suffers from tonal inconsistency and a lack of truly insightful retrospection, Hitchcock is elevated by inspired performances from its two distinguished leads.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Sep 4, 2018
Would have been much better off if it had taken a moment to sit down and decide on its own sensibility... It might have settled on the one, and retained its focus. But it didn't, so it doesn't, and it tells us nothing. Go to Full Review

The cod-psychologising is a little clunky but [Helen] Mirren's Mrs Hitch is inspiringly ballsy - with a dollop of the vulnerability that made you sob in The Queen. Go to Full Review

The film balances its darkness with its cheekiness extremely well. The drama never swings too deep and the comedy never turns farcical. Go to Full Review

The acting is top-notch all around, but Gervasi’s treatment makes one want to pick up a Hitchcock biography instead. Go to Full Review

Rey S Jan 19, 2019 Why do people hate this movie? I can see WHY people, hate it, but that doesnâ(TM)t mean they should.
Leia R Sep 25, 2018 A fun look into Psycho.
Anakin P Sep 17, 2018 Hitchcock is a fictionalized look behind the curtain of one of my favorite films, which is probably why it appealed to me. I could have done without the fantasy sequences, which I felt muddled the story, but the performances were solid. This movie made me appreciate Alfred Hitchcock a little more as a filmmaker. See more
Poe P Aug 23, 2018 It's not the best biography movie, but I actually found it to be quite enjoyable. Although I wonder if the flick took some liberties from the actual life of the director, it's an interesting, and even sometimes funny, and imaginative story on the production of one of the most important classics in history, as well as the man behind the camera. And Anthony Hopkins was the perfect choice to play the Master of Suspense himself, and Helen Noreen and Scarlett Johansson are great too. Overall, this was a pleasant viewing. Recommended !! See more
Jun 18, 2018 A moderately enjoyable snapshot of Alfred Hitchcock's life during the making of Psycho, most certainly done with some dramatic license, but tainted with mediocre performances by Anthony Hopkins and Scarlett Johansson. Helen Mirren and Toni Collette, specifically the former, make the film tolerable, but generally it's worth waiting for cable before spending the hour and a half watching Hitchcock. See more
Harry S May 21, 2018 If only its screenplay was as polished as its performances, its plot as focused as its inspiration, or its direction as inspired as its subject, then this biography might have offered more than a prestige made-for-tv movie. But with lines that explicitly telegraphy the stakes and motivations, and with a narrative that does more than literalize (which is to say, dumb down) Hitch's nuanced metaphors and artistry, what you get is little more than a good looking flick that utterly misses the real edge of Hitchcock's genius.
