Critics Consensus

People hate Highlander because it's cheesy, bombastic, and absurd. And people love it for the same reasons.

Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander is without a doubt one of the finest cult films of the 1980s. This 1986 film is a wonderful action-fantasy romp that pretty much works on every level. Go to Full Review

As the climax approaches, this sci-fi/fantasy blend tends to bore, struggling to turn sword-fighting and an inevitable showdown for an undefined “prize” into excitement. Go to Full Review

Leia S Apr 4, 2019 Though very campy, over-the-top and cartoony in some sequences, Highlander is nonetheless an epic fantasy adventure in time and settings with a solid score, some terrific sets and memorable imagery. The acting can be shaky, but its villain is very effective. The concept is great and the movie is quite solid and memorable, but it could have been much better overall. See more
