During summer vacation, Troy gets a job at Sharpay's resort but doesn't realize she has an ulterior motive for hiring him.

Critics Consensus

Surprisingly better than its predecessor, High School Musical 2 returns to enchant tweens with its snappy songs, wicked dance moves, and peppy spirit.

It's an irrepressibly colourful and upbeat effort and the result is Grease meets Fame meets Annette Funicello and Elvis Presley, for 8-to-12-year-olds.

High School Musical 2, like the original, does well by doing good. While Disney coffers swell, these movies inspire a new generation to think seriously about dance and about the impact of drama laced with music.

[High School Musical 2] succeeds as what it's designed to be - a good-enough-for-the-kids, clean-enough-for-the-parents, profitable-enough-for-Disney product.

The original High School Musical may have started it all, but its sequel is the movie that permanently etched those songs into the millennial consciousness.

The musical numbers are ready-made for single release, the performances, as before, are energetic, and the minor characters are given extra screen time, making the action more rounded. All in all, it's a squeaky-clean delight.

High School 2 Is my favorite of the three High School Musical films. It does nothing but add to the original film. First of all the biggest draw to the film is its music, that of which is brilliant. The songs are more interesting and choreographed better that the original. This movie also marks the start of Zac Efron's singing career. The songs are emotional and in most cases help to drive the plot forward. This movie also provides much of the needed character progression that is needed for the characters that were introduced in the first. The setting is used as an adversity for our characters and Troy goes through, be it classic, well done character arc of good to bad to redemption. The end of the movie is also a classic scene in which our main characters kiss for the first time in two movies after being so close for the majority of this classic Disney sequel.

The second installment of the musical franchise does not expand or develop its characters, while the music is less catchy than the previous film.
